His name is Boots, and we found his owners today...
The cat we found on Thursday is now back in his home with his owners, just a few blocks away from here. It was really hard to give him back, and I got teary-eyed. Still...he wasn't ours, and we couldn't keep him.

We went to the Humane Society, had him scanned again, and received the owners' information. We drove all the way back to our own neighborhood to deliver the cat to his rightful owners, then immediately turned around and drove out to the Humane Society again. We wanted to adopt a cat we could call a member of our own family.

I now believe Boots came to us for a reason.

After looking at just a couple of cats this afternoon, we saw the one that seemed to be calling out to us. He's a 2-year-old orange tabby, and there was something vaguely familiar about him. (We had an orange tabby several years ago, but that wasn't the familiarity I saw in him.)

We spent some time getting to know him and decided that, yes, we'd like to take him home. As I was filling out the paperwork, I noticed an intersection near my home listed on the cat's information card.

"Does this mean he was found in that area?" I asked. The answer was yes.

"I know this cat!" I said.

A few weeks ago, an orange tabby with no collar followed my children and I almost all the way home from my daughter's school. We were walking at a leisurely pace, and he seemed to like us. I had it in the back of my head that if he followed us all the way home, I'd let him in. He wound up disappearing about three houses down from ours. I had seen him before near the school, and I assumed he had a family nearby.

That was the cat we had just now found at the Humane Society and were adopting!

As silly as it may sounds, it seems as though Boots came to us to get us to the Humane Society to find the orange tabby.

As of this afternoon, we have another member of the family. We named him Dean Martin, "Dino" for short.

He's snoozing under my bed right now, but I'll try to get a picture of him later.

4. Congratulations.
What a great story. Cats are soulful creatures and it is really extraordinary that you and this one have a history. And, yes, I do believe in karmic journies. To know both cats you speak of have loving homes is a terrific culmination of this journey. Thanks for sharing.
And now, photo please.

9. Did you ever find out how Boots got out
of his house? How were his humans--were they overjoyed to see him again? Would love to hear how the kids are with Dino, too.

10. They have a dog/cat door - I saw it when we dropped him off.
His people seemed very happy to see him, especially the kids.

My kids were kind of crowding Dino today, which is why I suspect he went off for some R&R under the bed. I told them to give him some time to get used to his new surroundings.

12. Oh, I am SO HAPPY for all kitties and humans involved!
Glad Boots found his family (I hope they're more careful! Why do they have a cat/dog door with a declawed cat?!?!?!).

Dino looks wonderful. We have a big loveable orange male tabby, he's the kitty love of my life. So very kind of you to pick up a shelter cat!

19. Yes! We got a microchip for Dino before we left the shelter.
That's included in the cost of adoption, as is spaying/neutering when needed.

15. Good for you...
... you are a good person.

1) This is why have all our cats tagged/chipped.
2) Two of our cats were adopted. The third adopted us (i.e., was a stray that wasn't tagged nor known to the neighbourhood).

17. Did you get the story on how Boots got separated from his family?
Had they been looking for Boots?

Do they routinely let their de-clawed cat out-of-doors?

*worried about Boots*

20. Dino must like kids
If he's being hanging out around the school and then followed you and your brood home, he must have been around kids and like it. It sounds like he is a wonderful addition to your family. And you didn't have to wait for nine months!

21. OMG that's so cool. I lost an orange tabby in Portland Me
about 2 years ago and I think about him every day. His name was Finnegan...coz he was in and out the slider door again all day long.

The story of your orange tabby is kind of how my orange tabby ended up with me (in picture). He followed the daughter of a coworker of mine and her friend. Just kept following them around. The gray kitty next to him was rescued by my f-i-l. Its definitely so rewarding to adopt a kitty that you know really needed a home. He is precious, by the way! :-)

Not just for giving a kitty you found a temporary home, and not just for going the extra mile to find his people. You are awesome for going back and adopting a kitty that needed a home. Sounds like you two were meant to be :) Everything happens for a reason!
