5. From Kansas....
Well, being a resident of Kansas, I have to tell you you're on to something! ;-) I was actually born and raised in California, and lived there most of my life. I find myself here in Kansas (where the world is still flat) for purely professional/career circumstances. But I am ashamed of this place for a lot of reasons. Don't get me wrong...some of the nicest folks you ever want to meet live here, but the nutcases who voted in our state school board make me literally ill! We are the laughing stock of the WORLD! Well...stay tuned...if you see some crazed mom on CNN suing the state school board over its stance on Intelligent Design, that will be me.

And I'm just as angry at the school board.

Hopefully you are near KC?

21. I'm in OP too!
Hey there! Thanks for the welcome! I also live in Overland Park. And like I said, the folks here are actually very nice. It's just this school board thing that's got me in a tizzy. Other than that, we've liked raising our kids here, for the most part. We came here to go to graduate school at KU, and so we're Jayhawks now--it's just what happens!

8. The scariest part of Wizard of Oz for me wasn't the monkeys...
It was the scenes where the wicked witch was in her tower with the crystal ball that could spy on Dorothy, especially when Dorothy was thinking out loud.

And the scariest part of that is that it's now kinda like reality.

13. I love Kansas.
I love driving across Kansas in the middle of summer, taking the two-lanes and back roads to avoid the interstate. I love stopping at little Mom and Pop places for a cold Coke. I love ths smell of Kansas. And I've never been treated badly by a Kansan.

P.S. Sepia is a color.

14. Well what do you call that vivid black and white in the old films..
I loved driving through Kansas...

We took the back roads for a while...

The rolling country.... Al that green, green, green everywhere...

16. I call it "black and white."

A lot of people miss the beauty of Kansas by sticking to the Interstate, I think. Same with Nebraska and Iowa.

23. Nice Kansans
That's for sure (that you won't be treated badly by a Kansan). During the election, when I had my Kerry signs all over the place (and was quite outnumbered), even my neighbors who had Bush signs up cooked for me when I had surgery! It's amazing...If you even hint that you or your family needs help because of any emergency, folks just show up with casseroles and volunteer to watch your kids! So, my neighbors and I don't talk politics...we talk about the leaves turning colors or our kids. And it's okay.

15. Wait until she steps out of that house
in Munchkin Land. Then it turns into color.

That is one of the neatest scenes in that movie.

20. Yip Harburg who wrote the lyrics for it was a socialist
There is a socailist meme in some of the lyrics. Supposedly. Heard it on Democracy Now! radio in the last few weeks. That show is probably still up for mp3 download at their website, www.pacifica.org

Google: Yip Harburg the man who put the Rainbow in the Wizard of Oz.

A rainbow was never mentioned in the book, and this made fans of the book angry at the time. Harburg was blacklisted from Hollywood during the McCarthy era. He worked only on Broadway which is the only place black listees could work in the era. He wrote the lyrics, most notably for 'Finian's Rainbow'. There is the rainbow again. Ever pay attention to some of the lyrics in 'Finian'?

These are some tidbits I learned from the show. Give it a listen yourself if you can.

27. Bob Dole doesn't live there anymore?
You know the cool part about the movie? When the house lands in Munchkinland, Dorothy's already in color, but she doesn't know it yet. If you look closely, as she opens the door to the outside, her dress is a shadowy blue.

Hmm... then the munchkins are invited to "come out, come out wherever you are and meet the young lady who fell from a star."

Some see an appeal to the gay community (and that's cool, I can see where that's there)...
But I see equally an image of conversion and bapismal regeneration. Her trip to Oz is, of course, her spiritual journey.
