Any electronic techs here? I have a question.

I bought a 24" television at the Goodwill today for $24.99. It's a 1993 Magnavox. It works beautifully except for one thing. In dark scenes, it loses vertical sync.

I had an old, beat up (video) signal amplifier laying around, so I attached it, and it helps quite a bit. Now I only lose the vertical sync in very dark scenes (i.e., views of space with only stars).

I have two questions.

1. Would you think that buying a new signal amplifier might take care of that?

2. More likely, it will need to be repaired. Does this sound like the kind of problem that is going to be expensive to fix, or something that a tweak to a potentiometer would fix?

1. Nope, problem will get worse, and no amount of signal amplification will help permanently.

2. Fairly expensive, since modular parts aren't made any more this set and any fix will probably need to be hand fabricated.
