Last chance: Get a great Christmas present, and help DU as well!
Go here for details:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=105&topic_id=4325332

Remember, I'm going to use the dollar-per-cookbook donation to DU to buy stars for as many people as I can. That will spread the benefits all around.

But you need to get your order form in the mail to the library by next week. I'll get the total number of DU orders around the 15th, and make the contribution to DU before Christmas.

1. What???!!!!
Show me the vegetarian/vegan entries in this cookbook or I'm starting a PETA thread about cookbooks that exploit animals!!!!!!!!!!

Kidding.

I'm signing up for one. I can convert those recipes, and I love helping out.

Thanks, bro.

2. I think the castor-oil cookies don't have any meat in them.
Though I still don't think I'd recommend that particular recipe to anyone I liked, be it vegetarian or not.

On a serious note of curiosity: When you "convert" a recipe, what do you substitute for the meat part? Beans? Tofu? One of those soy-based meat analogues (which I've tried, and some of them ain't half bad)?

What about the cheese? Do you eat the soy-based analogues? Those, I didn't like so much.

3. Well, it depends on what is called for
If it's a ground beef, then yes, a Boca analogue will work, or I could go with a homemade tvp.

Cheese? I have to say that cheese has befuddled many a vegan. It's tough to get the luscious melty cheese without, well, the cheese.

Eggs? Easy. Milk? Easy. Cheese? Oh, you cruel bastard...finding the Achilles Heel of the vegan community, what with it's melty-goodness...

4. You know, you COULD bend the rules just a little...
I don't mind not being able to drink milk, because I can't stand the stuff, but I'm damn glad there's no lactose in cheese because it tastes a hell of a lot better than TUMs as a source of calcium...

I could probably do the vegetarian thing without it bothering me much, especially because I really like Mediterranean / Middle Eastern / Arab food and could substite Boca Burgers for the lamb, but a fattoush without feta would be hard for me to accept.

5. Maybe a meeting in the middle?
I'd make you a devastating vegan fattoush, with vegan feta that you'd be praising. It'd bill with the gods...

6. Deal. I'm open to any food style, as long as there are olives.
And thanks for helping keep this thread afloat, though it seems I've tapped all the cookbook-buying potential that exists in the Lounge.

And trust me on this: When you see the book, you won't care if you like the recipes or not; you'll want to have it around just for the photography. It's that good, if I say so myself and I do.

8. And throw in a kick tomorrow, if you'd be so kind; I'll be working
in the morning and teaching the Little Guy to shoot pool in the afternoon.

Also, I am such a book lover that I would support nearly anything having to do with a library. I received a very nice book for supporting something I love. Thanks again.:D
