16. I hope you work directly for a newpaper, and not freelance.
I keep a "go kit" in the car out of old habit (EOS 10D, 24-70 'L' lens, EX460 flash), so about half a dozen times a year I stumble across something that the Hartford paper can use.

And it always takes about six months before the cheap bastards pay me. They'll print a picture of a Cub Scout pack making wallets (from one of their staffers) before they'll print a picture (from me) of an accident victim being loaded into a LifeStar helicopter, just to save the lousy seventy-five bucks.

If you're a freelancer, I admire your persistence. It's a tough sell.

20. I don't do much photography these days
When I did, it was as a newspaper staff member. I've freelanced a bit — mostly minor-league baseball, which was relatively easy because there was something of a demand for it. (I got a couple of shots in Baseball America, which was nice.) But, yeah, scanner-monitoring sucks, mostly for the reasons you outlined.

Years ago, I came across a car on an overpass that had spun out and crashed through the guard rail and hung halfway off the overpass, over the freeway below. I jammed home, got my gear, jammed back, burned through a roll, got in trouble with a cop for sneaking a look at his report (for cutline info), jammed back home, dipped the film, made a couple of prints from wet negs, wrote the cutlines and ran 'em down to the newspaper. They ran one the next day on A2... and paid me $10.

13. Seriously
As a working journalist for so many years, and with all the flak about the Lib'rul Meedya, I guess I was loath to give the asshats any more ammunition. If someone with an agenda had cared to dig up my membership, they could've made things a bit sticky. But now that I'm no longer with a newspaper, that's not a valid reason. So...

14. Well, I can understand your reluctance
given the situation you were in. The media is certainly a big target, for both sides of the political aisle.

And I really was kidding, you know!

15. I know ;)
But I also felt a real response was warranted. I'm pretty serious about the media at least appearing to be neutral.

18. me too
For several reasons. First I believe in what they do and stand for and secondly because thinking that bill o'reilly knowing there's one more ACLU member out there gets just a wee bit more hypertensive and I can truthfully send him e-mails telling him that whenever he mentions the organization I increase my contribution, but those never seem to make his e-mail segment which is about the only part of his show I watch.

...with a replica of the membership card on the front. I once wore it to a company picnic when I worked for a big-wig conservative.

26. They sent me a sticker
that says "Card-Carrying Member ACLU," but I don't think I'm gonna stick it on my truck, as I'm quite fond of it and would be forced to hunt down and destroy anyone who keyed the paint, smashed the windows, slashed the tires, etc.

So I stuck it on my office door. :patriot:
