Is anyone else plagued by outsourced (to India)
phone solicitation. I am getting all manner of junk SPAM type calls from someplace in Bangalore (judging from the still obvious accents) and find this bothersome for people paid a pittance to annoy a lot of people here. A vile development. And what can we do?

1. Is it me or does stuff like this
tend to spawn more racism amongst our less enlightened citizens?

2. It very easily could.
That's another thing wrong with it. The world is more complex than when I used to get thrown out of places for wearing peace buttons!

3. I could see a huge backlash
by the uninformed and unenlightened as a result of these business practices.

4. Perhaps also because some of these
phone jobs could have stayed in the states??

7. This whole thing only gets uglier and uglier
no matter how you package it!

6. This is already happening ...

And, market research is picking up on it. Those companies that have not outsourced, or at least have not outsourced any jobs that have contact with the public, are in the first stages of using this as an advertising tactic.

I saw a storyboard for an ad campaign a major communications company is considering using to promote its localized call centers. In it a call center rep named "Haji" is seen in a situation similar to that played by David Spade in the "the answer is always 'no'" commercials. The character is paradoxically portrayed as both stupid and coniving in that he either does know the answers to questions callers ask or intentionally doesn't answer those question he can. The whole thing stinks of a subtle sort of racism, and I am only thankful I shown this as an example of the kind of thing my company, which also uses localized call centers, would *not* be doing.

8. I made a joke on another board today about McDonalds being the only....
...company that didn't have to worry about outsourcing to India.

Then someone else informed me that I was too late....

http://www.mcdonaldsindia.com

Have to admit, some of the things on the menu look pretty good. They should test market some of them over here.
