Rachael Ray is going to overtake Martha Stewart soon !
As far as Queen of the Domestic Diva wars go. I just picked up Rachael's new magazine, which is great and I hear she's got a new mainstream network talk show starting up sometime next year. I'm a fan of her Food Network shows, which aren't threatening, and mostly fun!

OK, my prediction, and I'm closer to Martha's age than Rachael's, this new kid is AWESOME :) She lives in the Adirondacks, and recently married a veg*an. I like her alot. And she could be Jeff Corwin's twin sister :) What's not to like about that!

Her prep and clean up crews must work harder than she does. And that's the part of cooking I hate.

To be fair, I'm a fan of cooking shows, but rather eat out, which is easier for this herbivore v. carnivore family :)

Rachael does alot of veggie side dishes w/EVOO and spices that I can make meals out of :) She even has a vegetarian cookbook out now!

17. Giada hosts Everyday Italian on Food Network
she is lovely. She is not manic. She doesn't have that gawdawful accent, bad hair color, or awful wardrobe. She does not call Extra Virgin Olive Oil "EVOO--That's Extra Virgin Olive Oil."

She has never declared something Yummo-oh! or made Stoup or Sammies. She has never pretended that making mac and cheese with hot dogs was worth a half hour show. Her family is not "apple people from way back" and she never tells us that her grandfather called red wine vinegar "everyday vinegar."

She makes simple American-Italian recipes that are--yes--sometimes too rich for us, but she doesn't hurt our ears in the process.

Rachael can go hang out with Semi-Homemade HO Sandra Lee (aka SLop) and the queen of deep frying and mayo, Paula Deen. And they can do their hanging out far away from my television screen.

31. Giada DeLaurentiis is Tits and Teeth
she does Everyday Italian

I have difficulty with her, because in the same sentence she will pronounce italian items in the more casual "American" pronunciations, then she will turn around and exceedingly overpronunce the italian pronunciation of the same item. Plus, when she has people on her show, to help and learn, she gets really condescending with them.

Flame me if you wish, but she's a real lightweight and I hate the cinemagraphic quality of her show and the dubbed sounds. Way to theatrical, but from her family, what can be expected?

Sperm lottery winner ..... pure and simple.

And I don't give two hoots that she once worked for Wofgang Puck. Big frickin deal.

She's lucky she has a good crew to do the heavy lifting on her show.

10. Give me Anthony Bourdain any day of the week...
Rachael's $40 a day show really gets my ire up.

I understand her budget vacationing bit, but I watched her doing Santa Fe, a town I know well, and she just went to all of the wrong places - the major tourist trap joints. She could have done Santa Fe on less than $40/day by showing people the authentic foods that the locals really eat, not the sanitized places that are run by and cater to white touristas.

Bourdain, on the other hand, shows people the REAL local eateries, and REAL local food. He actively seeks out the most authentic, most traditional, most honest foods everywhere he goes.

Plus, Tony is a certified pirate whack job chef, an exact replica of most of the people I've spent time working with in kitchens.

Rachael
Tony

I'm a pretty damn straight married man, but I do think he's pretty hot (in a French sort of way).

Hower, he can't taste all that good, what with the chain smoking and near constant alcohol consumption.

But hell, I can drink and smoke with the best, so bring it on!

Plus, anything tastes good slathered in enough butter. :P

And a snob, and a punk rock loving, chain smoking, red wine drinking ex-junkie. He says he's lucky to be alive.

The reason I like to watch him is that he reminds me of almost every chef I've worked with. His book Kitchen Confidential is the absolute horrible truth about what goes on in kitchens all over the world, and you really DON'T want to know about it at all.

54. The $40 shows are a joke
I live in DC and watched the show for that area and couldn't believe it.

By the time she was done snacking her way through DC and eating crap you could get anywhere in the USA she ended up at a DC specific chain restaurant for dinner and has a burger/sandwich.

Given that she could have gone to one of any number of high quality "cheap eats" restaurants for lunch and dinner, consumed entrees that weren't placed between two pieces of bread and still have money left over for coffee and ice cream somewhere else, it was a travesty of a show.

Tony Bourdain is real. Wondered how far I'd have to go down this thread before I saw him mentioned. Damned fine writer, too.

RR? Not so much. I really began to loathe her when I noticed how she encourages under- or un-tipping on that godawful "$40/day" foolishness.

Best Tony Bourdain line? "It was bad. I mean really awful. I wanted to pluck my eyeballs out, dip my head i a bucket of lye and run screaming off a cliff. I mean, it was baaaaad." THis after eating an iguana tamale.

48. Actually, I've used a few of her recipes.
She tells you to do some of your prep on your shopping day(in my house it's Saturday). I have had no problem completing them in 30-35 minutes max.
Then again, my mom worked in kitchens for years and taught me shortcuts. I've also done my time in restaurant and cafeteria kitchens and have learned how to do something quickly yet efficiently. I know how to do 10 things at once in a kitchen while most of my friends, who have never done any kind of cooking in that manner, cannot figure out how to keep it together.
Like I said-I can do it but if it's not a style your used it I can see where it might take awhile.

33. Rachael Ray has many problems
Edited on Wed Dec-07-05 02:33 PM by hobbywizard
In case you haven't emerged from 30 Minute Yawns or Stuffing Yourself Like a Christmas Ham on $40 a Day in the past year, the dark forces are churning out orks left and right for the oncoming battle:

Rachael Ray Sux

I can't be arsed to contribute to that forum, but Rachael Ray does indeed Suck.

First of all - $40 a day...you wanna keep under that budget in ANY city in the world? It's easy: STOP EATING LIKE DAMN PIG! Jaysus on a popsicle stick - breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, drink, dinner....She eats twice as many meals on her touristic jaunts as I do on a normal day when I don't have museums to visit or rollercoasters to ride. Have a piece of fruit for breakfast, Rachael, and a sandwich or soup for lunch, and maybe you won't have to wear dark pants to cover that fat ass of yours!

And 30 minute meals are so named because you wouldn't wanna waste one extra minute on food so bland and dull. I have NEVER seen a single dish on that program that I'd want to replicate.

Now, Martha Stewart is unassailable. She is a misunderstood woman of understated charm and grace, and she knows well enough to have real chefs come on her program to make the dishes she couldn't make herself. The best crab cake recipe I ever saw was on her Food Network program.

I'm spent, but that felt good.

I agree with the posters who've given props to the Everyday Italian vixen. She could toss my gnocci any old time she wants!

A quickie (meal) after working all day w/o involving MSG.

Her recipes involve ingredients that we plebians can actually pronounce, often have on hand anyway or can find in our local markets.

Call me crazy but I'm sick of food network *chefs* who offer up recipes I have a knat's chance in heck of reproducing, given my middle class budget. At least Rachael Ray's offerings are affordable and don't require 2nd and 3rd language skills to even inquire about the ingredients, let alone afford them.

I'm not on her staff, so I wouldn't be able to comment.

The Martha Stewart that appeals to me is the TELEVISION personality - who I find to be cordial in the extreme.

If you are or were on her staff and have been abused, I am sorry. Perhaps you should find another position. If you aren't on her staff but keep tabs on her via the Enquirer or whereever, that's your prerogative. I'm just not interested in personal foibles. The woman does her job. And she does it a damned site better than Rachael does hers. IMO, of course.

I have seen some TV footage of Martha's nastiness towards her subordinates. Not quite the "Queen of Mean", but haughty and nasty nevertheless. Plus she's a greedy perjurer.

I could care less about the picayune points people make about cooking. Rachel's just fun to watch. Martha is bland like Wonder Bread.

...until The New York Times did a story on her in the Dining Out section. Very telling: They talked about her posing in a kitchen sink but didn't include a single recipe. The resulting mail brought home the fact that she is adored and reviled.

Me, I think I'm closer to the revile camp, just out of annoyance and a general sense of exhaustion.

I love the www.televisionwithoutpity.com forums on Rachel and Sandra Lee. Most people think the Food Network is putting pressure on Rachel to be more manic. She's calmer in the early shows. 64. Ina's house has siding on it that makes me get tingly
I love that woman, from head to toe. I wish she would adopt me.

I love all the Food Network chefs. I don't have cable, anymore, and I miss them like I'd miss long-lost family.

Hands, down, though, the hottest celebrity chef -- no matter how much of a revolting, petulant sellout he is -- is Rocco DiSpirito. He's got that pink cheek-blush thing going on. I melt! Followed second by Mario Batali, who is the hottest fat red headed guy in the world.
