Help! I need to be reminded that I can't afford an iPod
even though they are on sale for $269. I don't have much disposable income, and I've been doing just fine without one.

7. The kids or the iPods?
The kids are sixteen and twenty.
The iPods are the new 30 GB video model. One black, one white, both engraved. The engravving is free, BTW.

they're the right age to fully enjoy an ipod. of course you know by standard rules of parenting you bought each of them the wrong color and you never listen to anything they say and you suck, right? ;)

One wants all of my music, the other hates my music. (I don't need an iPod, but my iTunes library is huge.) So I still partially suck.

But my son pierced his own lip, saving me many dollars. Until the sucker gets so infected he has to go to the ER.

His piercing site is red and puffy, and has a little pus. He said, "Dad, pus means it's healing." I don't know where the hell he heard that, but I quickly disabused him of that notion, and we broke out the alcohol. Yikes.

37. If they don't die randomly, they die eventually.
Rechargeable batteries don't last forever, and they're not user-replaceable. Which is pretty cynical and evil of Apple, IMO.

50. LOL
No kidding.

The batteries are rather cheap too - considering how much leverage you get out of 'em!

Common misconception about those ipod batteries. I had it myself, before I bought mine. I would NEVER have purchased one if I had to ship the SOB to Apple and wait weeks on end (and spend over $100!!) for them to replace the battery and ship it back to me.

Whatever Apple marketing "genius" thought that one up should be pistol whipped.

;)

53. Looks like you still have to send it to Apple.
At least, if you don't want to have to fiddle with special tools, or void any warranty you have left.

No doubt, you know more than I do, but through your link I found this. Looks like the replaceable-battery thing is a recent development.

(Be sure to read the "Info" link at the bottom, too.)

58. Warranty dies after one year -
The battery life should be much longer than that. If it dies BEFORE the warranty, it's replaceable by Apple.

I don't know how "recent" the replaceable battery thing is - no doubt it wasn't that way (or, rather, no 3rd parties had yet decided to make an option available that Apple was not) at product launch.

Granted - I've only had mine a year and haven't come close to needing a battery replacement yet, but I know at least one person that has - and from what I understand (without having seen it with my own eyes) it's very simple. The special "tool" isn't really any big deal either - you could use a screwdriver - but then you'd probably scratch your ipod.

I TOTALLY agree that the whole "non-replaceable battery" concept by Apple was completely asinine. I *almost* didn't get one for that reason alone. I definitely would not have purchased one if there were no way to replace the battery but for shipping it to Apple at ridiculous expense and time.

26. You're foolish to go with an IPOD when there are so many other choices
out there.

I got a Sony Netman and I love it. It was only $149 and if I use the Altrac3 format instead of MP3 (you can convert with the software) I can get 600+ songs on 1gig (I have right now 595 songs but I have space left).

30. Here's a great "cheap" alternative - XM Radio.
At $30 for a Roady 2 it's dirt cheap to get one (and if you know where/who you can even get it for nothing). You can get a portable FM radio and have a little bit of mobility with it (the Roady 2 has a small FM transmitter). Programming comes in at $12.99/month but you get Air America thrown in for free. You don't have to buy or download music and you get something that *most* of the time suits your taste (well suits mine most of the time).

I don't need an ipod... now if I were using a walkman (as I used to do) then maybe I'd use an i-pod. But being married to the car and the house (as well as my wife and son) ... I don't have need for a personal stereo.

Mark.

48. Married to the wife is legal... married to my son is more metaphorical.
Of course I am not in "holy matrimony" to my 3 year old son.

I just love my son to bits that's all. However, unlike my wife (hopefully), he's going to leave home and make his own life. If I'm lucky, I get to spend the rest of my life with my wife. Maybe I die first, maybe she will. Maybe I get real unlucky and she decides to hate me and leave me. But only time and <insert deity> will tell.
