Why the hell would you put a 3 YEAR OLD in a belly shirt and shrug!?
We were at the mall, where we were watching the kids and Santa. It was fun and we were laughing until this family walks up. They had a three year old dressed in a tight red belly shirt, black shrug, and black pants. Her older sister, probably 7 or 8, was dressed the exact same way. Since when is it ok to dress your children as miniature hookers? Especially for family pictures?

1. The REAL question is....
Why do manufacturers make and stores sell hooker clothing for children? Because it sells. The world is full of non-thinking idiots.

Happily, the 5-year-old triplet girl is not given clothing of that kind from immediate family. If her cousins give it to her, it quickly disappears (returned).

For her birthday in late October, I gave her a T-shirt that said "Sweet". That stayed.

A cousin gave her one that said "Princess". That got returned. My niece does not want to convey that sort of message...either to her daughter or to the public.

And I agree...why would anyone buy it and put their kid in it?

Edited on Sat Dec-10-05 11:53 AM by dolo amber
in the kids dept? They're made for like 3-5 yr olds. BRAS. Not undershirts...straps, sad little 'cups', designs, the works. BRAS!

I can't even work up the energy to be appalled because the entire concept is just too baffling.

And had to show it to my 3-year-old!!!!! Luckily she didn't seem to care :)

I don't understand this crap at all. I am so happy to have a girl who likes some girl things, but also likes Thomas the Tank Engine, any kind of train, cars, buses, trucks, etc. She loooves her jeans and wants to wear a pair every day. Balance is the key for sure.

57. That really bothers me. You know why?
I want to buy some undershirts for my kindergartener. Regular girls' undershirts like we had when I was a kid - tank top style, maybe a pretty bow at the top. The intention is to keep her warm under her shirts and sweaters and jammies.

She is not quite six. She quite obviously has no use for a bra. There's nothing to support. The little "bra" won't keep her warm like an undershirt.

But I can't find any freaking undershirts! It's all mini lingerie! She's a little girl, for crying out loud. I want little girl undergarments for her.

78. My daughter is the same age as yours.
She'll be six in March. She's definitely interested in fashion, make-up, girly stuff. I know that has been the case for millions of little girls for decades, but I was a tomboy kid so I don't have experience being a girly girl. I'm struggling with how much I should worry about her thinking too muhc about appearance, and what I can do about it. I'm trying to send the message that girls are much more than "pretty" but I don't want to make the girly stuff forbidden fruits that makes her more obsessed.

89. I don't know if they're still making them,
but I've seen Disney Princess softballs and soccer balls. They're pink and girly-looking, with pictures of the various Disney Princesses on them (and they might even come with matching hair scrunchies), but they're definitely sports equipment. Maybe something like that would make you both happy.

I was a tomboy, too. I didn't play with girly stuff very much, especially anything makeup or fashion-related.

2. Had a friend walking in downtown Montreal...
...who saw a girl, couldn't have been more than five, wearing a shirt with 'Porn Star' written on it.

Another time she was walking with her son (they're Orthodox Jews, so my friend is always dressed exceedingly modestly) when they see a girl in low slung jeans and a belly shirt. The boy asks his mom if they can give the girl some money. When my friend asked why, he answered:

"She's so poor, she can't afford to buy clothes that fit."

She had two daughters. She tried her damnedest to make them as hooker-like as possible. The four year old had high heels and a bright red dazzling pocketbook, not to mention the miniskirt. It was horrendous. I was appalled, but then again, I am appalled by a lot of what goes on here in my hometown.

13. I went to get my hair cut once
The hair dresser had several professional style snapshots of her daughter, who looked to be around 6 or 7. The girl was wearing a tank top and miniskirt. In one pic she was lying back on her arms with her legs kicked up in the air, and looking at the camera with a cutesy little grin. In another she was kneeling and wearing a feather boa. Essentially the whole thing looked like a Jr. Playboy shoot. I sat there wondering what kind of mother would have her little girl pose like that for photos. :scared:

I was a bit put off when I had bought a sweatshirt for my daughter (very loose fitting 4T size, as my daughter is very tall for her age)... I had thought it was cute because it was yellow with an animal & flowers on it. However, the lettering (which I saw only after I had washed it) said "Foxy Girl" on it. Granted, it was an oversized sweatshirt and the animal was a fox. But, still.

20. What about two piece bathing suits?
Edited on Sat Dec-10-05 11:10 AM by tjdee
I'm always curious about people's feelings about women's clothing. I mean, women wear bikinis, but they're not going to walk around in their underwear.

My daughter wears two piece bathing suits, because they're easier to get on/off and to use the restroom. But when I went to the local store to buy a bathing suit, they only had string bikinis and midriff baring two pieces--for little girls. I do think there is a problem with what they are *manufacturing* for little girls--sometimes it's hard to find something that's not tricked out, as in the bathing suit case.

I eventually found one that covered up, but she's got a bit of a tummy so sometimes her stomach stuck out. I'd hate to think other people were calling my kid a "prosti-tot", etc.

...my daughter has a tankini. It just shows her belly button, that's it.

I'd never buy her a string bikini, they just aren't practical for a 6 year old who likes to jump around and splash in the pool. If Scotia ever lost her top, she'd be mortified.

I seriously question parents who buy these things for their girls. Are they thinking that looking sexy at the age of 5 is a good thing, or are they simply confusing sexy with cute?

67. I had bikini's when I was little
The one I had at 3 had little plastic rings instead of strings, and one I had at 9 really was a string bikini. The one I had at three my parents bought for me, the one at 9 i picked out myself. I loved two pieces because I stayed in the water until I really had to go to the bathroom, and I didn't want to struggle with a one piece. I wouldn't have cared if I had lost my top at age 3 (by age 9 I had breasts and some concept of adult modesty and shame), and quite frankly nobody else would have cared if I had).
I don't think anybody thought I looked "sexy" at age 5, becaue I was a five year old, plain and simple. I had an early love for lacy and silky things, which grew into my adult love of lingerie, but I don't feel that I was sexualized because I had these things. The adults around me really did just think I looked cute.

They have a lot of tankinis that cover pretty well. It's more expensive than much of what you will find in department stores, but is good quality and lasts through the season. Sometimes if you hit their Overstocks page or the Sears end of season clearance racks you can get some good prices.

it primarily covers the shoulders, and upper part of the body.
This is why it's called a shrug--it covers the part of your body that
would 'shrug'--your shoulders, upper arms.

It's like an abbreviated sweater in a sense. You've probably seen them

26. Because far too many women try to relive their
youth through their daughters and don't think about the consequences
of doing so. They (sadly) think it is cute...

The kind of women you will find allowing their little girls to dress
like this, are the same you may find getting them into those awful
pageants before they are old enough to even know what is going on.

Again, reliving their youth, or trying to capture something they missed
and desperately wanted through their daughters...

(at least that's my theory...;) )

Not all moms of course. Just enough of them to buy the crap and make it popular
enough for the retailers to continue making and selling it.

46. My related theory
Is that the women who do this have been taught to believe that a woman cannot function without a man in their lives to support them, tell them what to do, be the leader of the household, et al. The corollary is that a woman without a man is nothing. Thus, they see one of their primary roles as a mother as teaching their daughters how to attract and keep male attention: never going out of the house (or, out of the bedroom) without your "face" (i.e., makeup caked on an inch thick) on, wearing shoes that make your legs good as opposed to being comfortable, always being solicitous and never talking too much about yourself, and dressing with some skin showing.

These woman have an incredibly skewed idea of what male-female relationships should be.

Unfortunately, I grew up in the sort of area where tarting your six-year-old up for a pageant, "glamour phots," or even so they could perform in a gospel show was fairly standard.

74. A rant on pageant Moms;
I've seen ever documentary on these nutballs and even run into John Ramsey on vacation once (euwww)so my interest/obsession with this runs deep. I cannot for the life of me understand why they spend brazillions to tart up their daughters but can't get themselves a decent cut & color (or outfit).

(FYI i have two young daughters, neither of whom would wear a dress, even in private, for cash money)

that she wears over normal size t shirts. The tight shirts and belly shirts are not allowed.

Glad to see there are still parents that set limits with their
kids!

I've actually heard moms lamenting based on what 'everyone else'
is wearing.

Hello?! Peer pressure isn't new...

54. Bib overalls are still the most practical for little kids.
Material Girl wore a LOT of bibs when she was little. I loved them because her shirt didn't ride up and her pants didn't fall down--thus you never saw that bare tummy that always hangs out on little kids.

Now that she's older (Almost 9!) I'm having a horrible time finding clothing that doesn't scream "rent a date." We had a VERY long talk just recently about the fact that hip hugger jeans are NOT to be worn with shirts that might show a belly button.

I seriously object to finding clothing in any kids' size that is backless, spaghetti strap or "peek--boo" style.

There is one girl in my daughter's class that does wear stuff like that and it just breaks my heart to see it. The Mom is oblivious to it all--that little kid was wearing a "bra" (that she did not need) in first grade. The mom told her that she needed to "get used to it..."

At 9 we are working up to a bra on Material Girl. We do a lot of camisoles and tanks under her shirts these days. No WAY I'm buying that kid a thong to match her training bra. It just ain't happening. Thongs are made for somebody to see (they sure are not made for comfort as far as i can tell)or to take off.

At 9 she shouldn't even be thinking about sexy.

Laura

PS, in case you are wondering, Material Girl's nickname comes from the fact that my kid is a collector of everything. She is a pack rat beyond compare...

56. why not?
Most people aren't sexually attracted to 3 year olds no matter what they're wearing. A three year old should be able to walk around naked without being viewed as a sex object.

58. Agreed. But when the little girls are put in miniature versions of clothes
that adult women wear in order to look sexy or attractive, it may send an inappropriate message.

64. but historically children are put in miniature versions of adult clothes
Edited on Sun Dec-11-05 08:39 PM by liontamer
I agree that when the clothes have writing on them like "porn star" that the child doesn't even understand are inappropriate, but I don't think something as innocuous as an exposed belly button is cause for alarm. There's no reason a small child should have to think of her body as something shameful to be covered up lest other people get "the wrong idea" about her.

I think children especially should be immune from such judgments

66. It's not the children being judged.
It's the people who dress the children.

I agree that a belly button in itself is not a problem - my own little girls wore two-piece swimming suits. But when the shirt worn is just a smaller version of an adult top intended to be sexually provocative, one has to question the sense of the person who put it on the child.

91. i actually find them really practical
a lot of shirts are sleeveless and I appreciate the extra piece of fabric. They're just dance gear that was designed to be worn over leotards to keep warm but without too much bulky fabric to restrict movement or hide the body. They're this season's leg warmers.

You know how many times I refer to the kid as "lil girl" only to find out that long hair was on a boy.

I have nothing against long hair on men but geez, let the kid develop some before the long hair.

80. ah, but missmillie, you were probably a nice girl
without 12- and 13-year friends who smoked pot and shoplifted (I did neither at time, but my friends did).

I would have wanted a "foxy" shirt at that age, and might have stashed it in my locker (as I did with jeans, which I wasn't allowed to wear to school)

It's easy to condemn children - 8-9-10 year olds who wear "sexy" clothes. But middle school -- the 12-13-14 years-- are tough. the girls that age are just exploring their sexuality, some with the bodies but all without the maturity to do so.

83. it was in a restaurant
and the girl was with a woman I assume was her mother.

I'm sorry, but if we put people in jail for having sex with 12 year-olds, maybe we shouldn't let 12 year-olds dress in a manner that portrays them as sexual objects.

Frankly, I'm in my 40s and wouldn't wear a shirt that announces myself as a sexual object.

I agree with the other posters who have lamented Bratz, pants/shorts with words on the butt, "foxy" shirts, and all that other shit they use to teach little girls early what their true value is based on.

Fuckers.
