Audio geeks - My old crew at NASA
http://www.euphonix.com/news/reviews/psnus_nasa_oct05_1.htm

Nice article featuring my old crew at JSC. I hired 3 of the 4 people pictured while I was employed there. The person I didn't hire, I interviewed and they came aboard after I had left.

Great group of people. I sure miss 'em.

1. Looks like they have some fab gear to use too.
I enjoy imagining coordinating those differing delays from the space station and the Shuttle with live ground feeds.

Crazy, daddy-o.

And that article is the first time I've come across the letters ISDN in a few years.

Sounds like you had a pretty fuckin' cool job.

2. The hardest part was not being able to send a mix minus on the SAT.
When they do live shots with the networks, they are not allowed to send a mix minus on the bird. The have to send a full mix. The NASA TV charter won't allow anything but a full program feed on the bird. You'd think that they'd just use a second satellite....but the funding was never there.

So the networks get the video from NASA TV, and the audio down a phone line. That audio also has to be delayed so that it matches up with the video. Sometimes, if the event is international, there may be a couple of satellite hops and then maybe a microwave feed. It could be a nightmare, but they do a couple of practice runs beforehand to get it all sync'd up.

And yep. It was a cool fuckin' job. But the lack of $$$ and the constant sleep shifting started to get to me. Like I said, really great people though. That was the best part.
