Woo-Hoo! Guess what I did yesterday?
I registered for my first college classes in almost four years!:bounce:

I am SO very ready to go back! I have a public speaking class, an advanced writing class, and I'll hopefully squeeze into a "media communications" class. I have all my liberal ed requirements, so I get to focus on my major, now.

I'm pretty solid on my major: http://www.d.umn.edu/catalogs/current/umd/colleges/76.html
I'm strongly considering a minor: http://www.d.umn.edu/catalogs/current/umd/colleges/45.html but I'm more flexible with that.

Now I have to wait a whole month until school starts. I can't wait to write a paper!:bounce: seriously!

5. What do you teach, GG?
I think us "older" students who have a bit more life experience tend to appreciate the value of an education a bit more than *some* of the young'uns. I'm far more committed and determined to my educational goals than I was at, say, 18. After spending six of the last eight years out of school raising wee people, I'm also quite hungry for some intellectual challenge and stimulation. I've been proofreading countless papers for my friend in a pre-law program for months, and it caused me quite an itch to get back in school myself.

2. What do you want to do with that degree?
Edited on Sat Dec-10-05 10:41 AM by tjdee
I have a degree in a related area, and it's not as easy to get a job compared to say, accounting or nursing.

I LOVED it, I really enjoyed my classes and everything, so I'd recommend it for just that reason....just curious what you're seeing as a career goal. My job isn't really related, I'm thinking that's the case with a lot of those types of majors, LOL!

Good luck with school (and everything else) !!

6. I don't actually know.
:hide: I'm planning on spending a significant amount of time with my instructors and the career counseling staff. I don't really have the option to leave the area after graduation, so I'm going to have to gear my training towards the local job market. I might have to lean more towards PR, technical writing, advertising, or journalism. It remains to be seen. My exact curriculum could certainly be altered in the months to come, pending my discovery of what I'm ACTUALLY likely to be able to find a job doing with a Comm degree.

12. You could always fall back on your modeling career...
Modeling is a form of communications, right?

3. Hey, good luck!
And congrats! I'm too young to be shipped off to college yet, but I can understand your enthusiasm.

13. I'm sure it is.
I want to go for an English/writing major of some kind, with a minor in something funky, like some language. Might not be too practical, but.... :D D

9. I'm glad.
People are surprisingly willing to compromise their health and well being as a way of "balancing" school and work/ life. Glad you're saner and more self caring than that. Cheers.

10. Hi Lara!
That's exciting news and great to hear! Good luck. I know you'll do well and enjoy it too. I imagine there really is added value to college education when a person has real-life adult experience to draw on. I was pretty clueless when I was in college!

I'm sending by best thoughts and wishes your way. :hi:

11. Hi, Hon!
Edited on Sat Dec-10-05 11:49 AM by LaraMN
Thanks!:pals: I definitely wasn't too in tune with myself when I was in college the first time around. I just hope I can pick up some scholarships along the way- my financial aid SUCKED! I was offered about 200 dollars more this time than I was four years ago when we made MORE money and had TWO less children! Oh yeah- and the school I was attending then cost about a third of the one I'll be at now! How broke do you have to be!? I'm gonna have alot of loans.:puke:

14. Good for you! Being in school when you actually want to be in school
is so much fun and very rewarding.

I was in one school for a few years and hated every second I was there. After some time off and a transfer somewhere else I was so ready to be there that I went from having a 0.0 (no kidding--right out of animal house), to getting almost a 4.0.

Media Communications sounds fun, too! I was a communications major and the media ethics class was by far my favorite class. You're going to love it.

Here's to you getting your learn on. You're going to knock their freakin' socks off.

:toast:
