Hallucinogenic "In Dub" ! Any other CD's along these lines?
Edited on Sat Dec-10-05 02:35 PM by darkstar
Listening right now on my big system. Can't believe how much I like this disc. Lengthy reggae dub outs done up electronica fashion w/ Pink Floyd/Orb trippiness.

As near as I can figure, the Hallucinogenic outfit (basically one guy) took existing bang up hardcore dance tunes at say 140 pm and cut the underlying tempo in half to say, 70 bpm. I.e., the lead lines and such are the same tempo, but they added dub baselines and created new downtempo drum beats, added tons of trrrripppppy samples, occasional skankin organ parts, guitars, melodical lines etc.

On top of it all, really outstanding production all around. Wonderfully tight bass, great use of stereo field, constant evolution rather than mere build up and break down in most elctronica.

Anyhow, I can't believe how much I love this. My searches for music like this have all fallen short, even my beloved Orb mastermind Alex Paterson's "Voyages in Dub" don't compete.

Please help me find more like this.

And if this sounds to your tastes, I can give it two personal thumbs up.

This 40 something who grew up on the Dead and Neil Young loves it.

1. Not sure what those guys sound like...
But the words "dub" and "trippy" make me want to suggest DeFacto's "Megaton Shot Blast".

2. I like old-style dub better....
But you may want to check out the band Deadbeat for more drugged-out modern dub.

As for the old stuff, Augustus Pablo, Keith Hudson, King Tubby, and Lee Perry are the names you need to know. And I swear on a stack of Clancy Eccles singles that UB40's "Present Arms In Dub" is actually a great fucking dub album, but hardcore reggae-heads would probably look at me funny for suggesting such a thing.

Oh, and for something really interesting, try out The Flying Lizards, who bridged the gap between the experimental side of the post-punk thing (circa 1980) and dub. They could get super-trippy at times.

3. Yeah I like me the older stuff too
Must have 15 Lee Perry discs including the Arkology (?) set. August Pablow. Yabby You. King Tubby. I'm w/ you on the whole re: modern dub. Too clean, fake drums, digital delays don't roll of the high end like on repetitions like tape delays.

The thing I like about this disc is that it isn't the newer Mad Professor sound, but long stoner excursions set in a decidedly electronica world, to be sure, but to me very fresh sounding. It's like Orb if the basslines there were truly reggae based, I guess. And there is "old-school" attention to detail like melodica, high end roll off on delay stabs, etc.

Thanks for the tip on Deadbeat. I'll check them out. Along w/ DeFacto, primate 1.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Vibrate on....
