He was just beyond everything else out there. And being a kid, I couldn't even put my finger on why.

23. It's been a wobbly day. We went to the Christmas Tree Farm
and I staggered up snowy slopes that, back then, I'd not have even noticed. (I was a Human Mountain Goat back then, embarassing more experienced hikers / climbers / rapellers, not that I was vain about natural abilities, or any such.)

Got down those slopes, though, with a magnificent longleaf Pine, which the same I'll send you a picture of as soon as Mrs R and The Little Guy are finished decorating it tomorrow. Unlike the spruces, the pine glows with a green that you'll not find in other trees in these New England winters...and I'm inhaling its fragrance even as I type.

And may I add, not for the first time: No, thank you.

24. I hope like anything that you don't mind what I'm about to say here...
But, aside from ZW, you are the ONLY person here tonight who is talking to me......

And your thoughtfulness touches me, and makes me a little weepy.....

Thank you.......

You are such a special guy...

Lucky, lucky Mrs. Redstone....

BTW, the Christmas cards went out Saturday......

I'm touched as well. As I will be when I see that card in the mailbox.

Not to make you any weepier, but did you see this one?

I gotta go. Wish I could hang around and yack with you some more, but I just can't. Maybe you should consider moving to a more reasonable time zone?

37. Thoughts on Richard Pryor....
Edited on Sun Dec-11-05 01:34 PM by Jade Fox
It's been a long time since I heard or saw any of Pryor's work, but I've been thinking this
morning, as memories surface, about what made him so good.

It's been mentioned in various eulogies that Pryor's humor contained elements of vulnerability.
Specifically, he often illuminated the fear that African Americans feel in everyday life in America.
That made him different that many Black comedians, who focus more on anger. With Pryor, the anger
was there, but it was often as a response to sheer terror at what might befall him as a Black man
at the mercy of unthinking whites. It gave his comedy a weight that others don't come anywhere near.

I remember an old routine he did about the movie The Exorcist, the point of which (if I may be so bold
as to define the point of a comedy routine) was that as a Black man, he couldn't understand why
white people would deliberately subject themselves to unpleasant experiences for thrills. Aren't there
enough unpleasant experiences in real life? The sub context was: There are for Black people.

Go to the light, Richard.
