Just to make things even MORE fun, thought I'd try cutting off my thumb!
Ok. That's a bit of hyperbole. I didn't actually cut it off. I just gave myself a good slice right through the webbing between the thumb and index finger. I got a really awesome look at the inside of my hand, after washing away about a half-pint of blood. It was great.

What was even more fun was packing up the baby and riding over to the emergency room, and waiting 5 hours to be seen.

We packed up rather quickly, as I was bleeding all over the place and feeling really foggy. So we only brought one bottle of milk, one bottle of water and one jar of food for the baby.

When they finally called my name, I thought, maybe there's a purpose in making you wait this long, because after 5 hours, I was hardly even thinking about the shots and the stitches. I was just thinking, this is the last thing I have to do before we can bring our baby home.

But I was a little nervous and I said so. The doctor asked me why and I said, "Because it's going to hurt." And he said, "Oh yeah. It's gonna hurt."

It was the needle that really hurt when the numbed the area. But also either only half the area was actually numbed, or it wore off, because I felt the last 2 stitches pointedly.

And now I can't use the thumb on my right hand. Tra la la!

Things could be so much worse I know. But that's the news in my little world.

3. It was such a long wait, and it was such a confusing place.
I kept wondering if I'd given my paperwork to the right person, and if the were ever going to actually call me.

Someone asked me what I did. I told him, I was doing dishes, and I went to wipe around the rim of a class, but it was cracked.

The guy waiting behind me with an anti-bush T-shirt said, "I just did the exact same thing."

Must be pretty common.

6. Wow, it IS common
I did the same thing several years ago but just cut the outside of my pinky finger pretty good. I still have a small scar.

5. oweee.. That's why I do my own stitches
The cut parts' nerve endings are severed, and it's less painful to just sew it up without the shots..

I never have gotten an infection, and no scars either..

7. Hubby took care of me all day.
Baby is now entertaining himself before bed. Taking things out of drawer and putting things back into a drawer. And hubby will be back to take care of me tonight.

:D

:hi:

Thanks.

4. Gotta love ER's
When I broke my back, I sat in the waiting room of the ER in a wheelchair for 5 hours. THEN I was finally called to the window and told to go to the "fast track" waiting area where I waited for another 2 hours before I finally saw a doctor. Luckily, the fast track area had a long bench which I lay down on since sitting up was excruciatingly painful.

Once in the exam room, I was refused any pain meds on the grounds that they didn't want me driving home on them! I explained through clenched teeth that I had a (very patient) friend waiting for me who would drive me home and some 8 hours after fracturing a vertabra, was given a shot of Demerol. Whew!

But at least I didn't have a small child with me!

You're fortunate - it sounds like your cut was in the same area as my daughter's was when she was five years old. She severed the tendon and the nerve and required some pretty delicate surgery to repair it. There's a lot of important stuff in your hands.

I'm glad you're okay and sorry you got hurt!

9. Thanks.
My first 2 experiences in an ER, I didn't wait at all. But one was that serious car accident, and the other was an allergic reaction where my throat was swelling shut.

But waiting that long for a broken back! That's nuts!

Yes, I actually lucked out one again--it could have been much worse. For as deep as it was, I missed the tendon and nerve. I could see them, and they were just fine.

:)

11. that stinks. waiting five hours to get a few stitches.
when i worked in nyc it was our policy that if someone got hurt on the job and it wasn't life threatening we would drive home to nj and go to a hospital. much better to drive and hour and get treated than to sit for 4 hours at a manhattan hospital.

12. We also thought...
...a couple times we may have been better off driving to Stony Brook, L.I. where Cmy husband's parent's live. 1 1/2 hour drive, then I would have been in and out and we could have spent the night at Grandma and Grandpa's house.
