49. Well, I don't know that I consider myself frugal OR a thrift shop type
but I happened to stop into a consignment shop on a fluke on Friday, and came home with 3 handknit sweaters, one of them wool, for $7.50 total. And that night I got another handknit sweater, also wool, but brand new for $10 at a Mexican restaurant. Amazing, just amazing. Two of the used sweaters are a cotton/rayon yarn I may recycle into my own projects. Or not. I'll have to wait and see. Not quite sure about the wool used sweater -- it was made in Norway, I think. Very nice fair isle number, my size.

Decisions, decisions.

Although I have not been to one very much since I closed mine.

The other day at the Salvation Army Thrift shop I got three pairs of pants and a belt for $5.5. I should have been shopping there more.

3. awesome!
I have been buying clothes for the last few months. Losing weight, I've been needing to find things that fit but only for a short while because the weight loss is ongoing. Resale stores have been wonderful! Some days I can't find a thing and other days like today I found EXACTLY what I needed.

We love used bookstores too!

and used cars, who can afford NEW anyway ? : )

4. I love resale!
I'm really into pen-and-paper gaming, but the books can be expensive, especially with money being as tight as it is these days. When I've shopped through eBay or Amazon marketplace, I've scored $20-35 books for $5! They were like new, too!

5. They're starting to raise their prices, I've found.
I think my thrift store knows what things will sell for on ebay, LOL. The clothes are still reasonable, but books sell for over a dollar sometimes! What's up with that!

when they have tag sales though. 1/2 off, 1/3 off.

Some things are priced too high, I guess you have to go in knowing what you want :)

18. I have noticed the same thing happening...
there also seems to be a lot more fellow book grubbers in the thrift stores. I almost got into an altercation with a jerk who informed me, "Wait a minute, I haven't looked through those yet"
As if I was supposed to allow him to go through them first? Needless to say, that didn't happen.

8. my best score from goodwill
a 100% cashmere sweater that was 1/2 off because it had the "tag color of the day"--$1.99

next best score from goodwill: a silver metallic long-sleeved turtleneck that was also $1.99, bought the day before a chi-chi cruise. i wore it to dinner in the formal dining room, got tons of compliments on it. "wow, i bet that set you back a few." "why yes, in fact, it did."

i can't go to regular stores now...i know i can get that stuff for much cheaper.

31. So valuable, resell it on ebay, if a Coach store will validate it.
I learned older Coach and Fendi bags can be validated by the manufacturers and they are quite valuable in and of themselves. I gave my beloved a small Fendi clutch when times were good over 10 years ago, and it's worth 50% more now on Ebay than the $285 I paid for it in the Fendi Store.

9. Shop them all the time. Also places like Mardens or Walls, which are
salvage retailers. Ships get in too late for scheduled sales, hurricanes they buy up all the stuff and sell them for huge discounts.\

Cheap pants, dress shirts and jewerly to rework. I also am a big fan of my local used bookstore.
Today I went to a used cd/dvd shop. They had a huge sale! I picked up a copy of The Black Cauldron on dvd for $3 and they guarantee the quality of it.
Stocking stuffer and she'll never know the difference.

25. I bought my husband 9 shirts last week
at the local Goodwill store. All of them excellent brands like Lands End and Eddie Bauer, and spent $12.

In the last month I have purchased more than 40 books, all hardcover with their spines virtually untouched - they are brand new books, for a buck a piece. They are my Christmas presents this year. All of them excellent authors and titles that I am proud to give as gifts.

I can't remember the last time I bought clothes for myself at a retail outlet. I always go to the re-sale shops.

45. here's my steal
i have to add an update to my best scores at goodwill. on black friday, my cousin & i went to goodwill (our little tradition) & i found four salad plates (which really are the size your dinner plate SHOULD be), furio thailand, for $0.49/each. out of curiousity, i went to froogle today to see how much these things go for in a "real" store.

:wow:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7324310882&category=25

granted, this is a dinner plate in this series, but considering i got 4 salad plates for just under $2, my mind reels....

32. Yup.
Bought my favorite pair of shoes at the local Savers - a pair of 3 hole Doc Martens oxfords - for $3. I wear hats, too, and there are usually an assortment of them at the Humane Society Thrift. Also our dishes (one piece missing on a set of vintage Noritake for 12) for $45, my spinner bike....

I need to hit one of the locals - last year was a cardigan year but this year, I'm wanting pullovers and most of my old ones are way too big now. Like you, I've lost weight. (Not in the tatas, though... Will those ever come off????)

We buy books from the used booksellers on Pearl Street, our contribution to keeping Boulder Weird.

38. I think she's talking about thrift stores
I don't know what you call them in Switzerland. I've never used the expression "resale store."

These are places like the Salvation Army stores that sell all the doanted clothes and housewares, sometimes electronics, and furniture that gets donated.

It's really a lot of fun to sift through stuff and you can find a great bargain. Although, I have to be careful and watch for petite-sized clothes, otherwise they're too big for me. :-)

39. A couple of the stores around here
that aren't affiliated with Goodwill and the Salvation Army Thrift shops actually use the word Resale in their names, I guess that's why I refer to them as such. We have a couple of consignment shops too. They tend to be a tad more expensive, but you get what you pay for. I'm just thrilled to be able to find clothing that fits now :)

41. Consignment furniture was my deal.
Half of my condo is furnished by 2nd hand, consignment stuff. I have a walnut dresser with carved feet(one of a kind), a corner breakfast nook, a unique entertainment center, a cobbler's bench I use for an end table, a glass covered display end table, and a telephone bench. I paid 825 for all of this. The dresser is truly unique, and would probably get 700-800 at an antique shop. Possibly more, but who knows.

I love the eclectic furniture I got, especially that the price was low. Layaway was my friend.

I love it when you find things with the original price tags still on them. But, this weekend, I'm on the other end. Beast Man and I are running out of space and we are purging. So far, our local Red Cross is getting a shower curtain and matching toothbrush holder. A christmas tree(once you've gone pre-lit, you can't go back!). Lots of christmas decorations. Candle holders. One of those light up christmas houses.

More to come...I haven't done our clothes closets, or the two big miscellaneous storage closets.:scared:

48. I now make a living shopping at re-sale stores
After getting laid off, my friend who sells on ebay suggested going to thrift stores to find things to sell on ebay. I found a pair of bebe shoes for $2.50 (mint cond)that sold for $42 and a bcbg dress that I got at goodwill for $6.99 that sold for $60. That put a big smile on my face because I was down to my last $20.

Last week someone donated a Thierry Mugler dress (see pic below) to goodwill that I bought for $6.99. The dress is ugly but a collector's piece and someone on Ebayland shelled out it for $202 to buy it.

I now have a store on Ebay listing re-selling the items purchased at resale stores. http://stores.ebay.com/Fashion-Rhapsody_W0QQsspagenameZMEQ3aFQ3aSTQQtZk

I'll never go back to mall shopping to pay full retail price. You find so many treasures at the re-sale stores and you can also make a extra money on the side.
