I can hear the deer farting around in the woods behind the back yard.

About an hour ago, I watched them crunch their way through the crusty snow in the side yard, on their way from the swamp across the street to the bounty of winterberries in the woods in back of the house.

I sat very still, there on the side steps, not wanting to disturb the larger deer (Mom? Dad? In the light of the three-quarters moon, I couldn't tell), leading the two smaller ones; it was a sight to see, and I felt a twinge of guilt at the thought of venison sausages.

I hope they've lots of winterberries to nibble off the vines this night; the turkeys generally get all those berries before December, but the usual flock of thirteen has been strangely absent this Fall. I'm going back out there now in the hope that I'll be able to watch them return home for their rest.

I'll wish them well. And think no more of sausages.

That was the Barry White of your local deer population going off to party. That's what all the snorting was about.

The rut's definitely on here in the hills of Wild, Wonderful West Virginia.

After what they did to my garden last summer, I no longer think of them as "deer." Henceforth, they're "rats with antlers."

I see the little twits gnawing on my tree bark. I run outside and say, "Shoo!" and they look at me like I'm stupid if I'm going to go one-on-one with a buck that's got a rack as wide as a pickup truck.

I slink back into my house and consider making venison an exception to my vegetarian diet. }(
