1. Feist for me, too.
I've been telling anyone on DU who'll listen.

Her, and M.I.A. And for some good new new-wave ear candy, The Bravery.

That's about it for me this year.

11. Thanks, I checked out a couple videos
at Matador.com.

I definitely hear some Feist in her voice, and a bit of Kim Gordon from Sonic Youth. There's also someone else she reminds me of, but I can't put my finger on it.

The music's not bad, either. I see the CD's out in January. I'll keep an eye out and...who knows?

Thanks for the tip, bif!

Ever check out allmusic.com? Great source for new music. You can type in someone like Feist and they have a bio, discography and a list of similar artists, which you can click on to go to their pages. It's excellent.

15. Skeleton Key is good.
Edited on Mon Dec-12-05 09:58 PM by SlavesandBulldozers
i listened to some tracks of theirs a while back, loved it - then saw that they were coming in concert. I told my friend, who never heard of them to go with me to the show. I wound up not going, he wound up going and said they were ridiculous musicians, insane. I still bitch about not going to that show. . . .

on edit: Skeleton Key is on the Ipecac label. Mike Patton's label. There is a ton of really good stuff on that label you should check out. Like Tomahawk, Fantomas, Moistboyz, Desert Sessions etc. Mike Patton is a genius.

14. "The Shaggs"

I've become somewhat obsessed with their album "Philosophy of the World", especially the title track. It all began after I bought the book "Songs in the Key of Z". I can't begin to describe what it's like - so very, very, very wrong yet there's something wonderful driving it.

I've also fallen in love with The Langley Schools Music Project, again thanks to the book. WFMU has an mp3 of their version of Bowie's "Space Oddity":

http://blogfiles.wfmu.org/BL/0511/im/21_-_Langley_Schools_Music_Project_-_Space_Oddity.mp3

"The backing arrangement is astounding. Coupled with the earnest if lugubrious vocal performance you have a piece of art that I couldn't have conceived of, even with half of Colombia's finest export products in.me." --David.Bowie

33. Max Reger
Well I'd obviously heard of him ages ago, but hadn't got round to buying any of his music.

I love the modernism of the French organ school, and also love the older German tradition of folk like Bach and Buxtehude - Reger in some senses marries them. He's German and use much of that style (Choral variations &c.), but builds into them some modernism.

The Veronicas
The Like
Julie Gribble
Sufjan Stevens
Amy Rigby
Martha Wainwright
Brandi Carlile
Decemberists

Eisley
Mary Gauthier
Brie Larson (she's a teen pop/rock artist that could last if given attention - I admit to really liking her music quite a bit)
Laura Veirs
Tristan Prettyman
Helen Love (fans of older punk should check her out - very cool music IMO)
Annie
Aslyn
Miss Mary
Hope Partlow (good now, but I'm listing her because her voice stands out - and with more songs like the driving "Crazy Summer Nights" and the charming "Like You Do," she'll get better)
Alexz Johnson
Go Betweens
Rogue Wave
All American Rejects
Metric
Josh Ritter
Mountain Goats
Miranda Lambert
Imogen Heap
Kate Bush (had heard of her, but not much from her before this year)
Jerra

It's a truly awful radio station that will have me falling over laughing when it plays things like... oh... a Christmas song, part in German, part in English (in the same sentence!) that describes someone setting their kitchen on fire, or "Just a Gigolo" in both languages. It's really horrid for the most part, but very entertaining.

83. Fantastic stuff, isn't it?
I especially love their "Goodbye/And Goodbye/Whole Day" collaboration with guitarist Roy Montgomery, but all of their work is great (as is Montgomery's)

just found it in my record collection. i have no idea where it came from,i never heard it before, and there`s one or two pops on the album....issued in 1969 or 70. the scruggs clan, baez, doc watson, dylan.byrds, morris bros. really a great album, it was the transformation album for earl who with his sons laid a cornerstone for country rock and roll

87. I'm loving a new net radio site
www.pandora.com

They play just about everything except for classical. You can tailor it to what you like. I've gotten to listen to the kind of music I like by artists I've never heard of.

92. The WHOLE new album by Nickelback. Really.
Yes; I know it is MUCH too mainstream for most of you; but they just came out of the gate with a serious vengance. New drummer and an affilliation with Pantera has resulted in several hard rocking tracks with vestiges of Gary Cherone, Van Halen,Metalllica, Megadeth, and ZZTop. On one song Billy from ZZ plays and adds a wicked vocal. Another track is a tribute to Dimebag Darrell and includes one of his solos. A third, inspired by Metallica, is reminicent of the Black album or earlier. Of course I am in love with a fourth track because it speaks of a stripper and her boyfriend in a way many I know will find relatable and amusing. This album is guaranteed to stay in my CD/MP3 for quite some time......

93. Link Wray.
Admittedly, I picked up his greatest hits CD after hearing he died, but I've really been enjoying it. Highly recommended.
