Poll question: CaliforniaPeggy & I think a Feb. DU Meetup would be fun!
Edited on Mon Dec-12-05 09:42 PM by Whoa_Nelly
California Peggy and I think it would be fun CA DU meetup to have those who are in Central Valley and those in LA and SD areas to meet in Gorman (Ft. Tejon) the weekend BEFORE Valentine's Day. The idea is that there has to be an area that works as a middleground for being able to meet up.

There's an Econo Lodge there:

About Gorman
Gorman, California is an unincorporated community in northwestern Los Angeles County just west of the Antelope Valley where three mountain ranges meet: The San Gabriels, Tehachapis and the Coast Range. Its population is around 400.

Named after a nearby Fort Tejon United States Army Private who was discharged and stayed near the military outpost that employed him previously, the community is owned by the Ralphs family of Ralphs Grocery fame, who have owned the land there for generations. As the Ralphs family is getting older and larger, estate and tax planning is being done on behalf of younger family members - which is planning for the eventual sale to the right buyer.

Gorman is a well known stop on the original Ridge Route, famed for its Chevron Oil (formerly called Standard) service station. It has long been a truck stop and a Greyhound Bus depot, but now is mostly a gasoline and fast food stop for travelers on their way to Los Angeles or Bakersfield. Truck parking in Gorman is now much less than previously, and Greyhound closed its station here in 1977. Interstate 5 runs past Gorman and CA Route 138 connects to Interstate 5 a few miles south of the community. It is also just south of Frazier Park and Lebec. The California poppy covers the hills here in springtime.

The artist Christo arranged a set of colored cloth sheets on poles to add contrast to the summertime golden hills surrounding the area in the early 1990's. Thousands of visitors flocked to Gorman to see the display, which attracted international attention.

The motion picture Thelma and Louise was filmed in the community.
