What's a good anti-wrinkle cream or regimen that won't cause acne?
Edited on Tue Dec-13-05 11:03 AM by Ladyhawk
I'm SERIES!!!111!!

I've noticed some wrinkles under and around my eyes, yet my skin is still very prone to acne. I tried a very old bottle of Oil of Olay and it caused acne. I've also used plain lotion and it caused acne.

I look younger than I am and I'd like to keep that going. Really, I'm not that vain. I'm just not ready to grow up.

Do you know anything about how well it works on acne-prone skin?

44. Burt's Bees is great stuff.
I haven't had it for a while and this thread prompted me to go out and replenish my supply. I had acne prone skin too and their stuff really helped. And, believe it or not, after one use you'll notice a difference. I mean, it's not magic or anything, but you'll notice your skin looks cleaner and feels softer right away.
Try the orange cleanser and/or the citrus scrub, and the carrot day cream. And if you want to get fancy and treat yourself, try their foot cream (I forget the name. I think it's coconut or something.) It's a little sticky but it makes your feet ridiculously soft.
And, most of their products aren't too expensive.

Good luck with your quest--I know how frustrating finding products that actually work can be.

5. Embrace the eye lines!
I'm 30, and my eyes actually make me look closer to my age. I like looking like an adult.

I like the Oatmeal line at Bath & Body Works, BTW -- it's made for oily or acne-prone skin, but has a moisturizer. (There's also an eye cream in the line.)

7. Right on!
Me, too. My skin care routine includes washing my face and applying moisturizer only around my eyes. In the winter, if it's windy, I use moisturizer all over my face, but only if my skin starts feeling dry.

22. I look adult enough. :)
Some folks say I look like I'm in my twenties, but I'm really closer to forty. For some reason, I don't feel like I'm mature enough to be forty. I feel like I've missed out on the fun of youth, so I'd like a bit more time, if possible.

I have the same issue as you. My skin is still pretty oily, so I don't use a lotion over my whole face. I just use an eye cream under my eyes at night.

9. I'm nearly 60, so I figure I've earned my wrinkles.
But I recommend Almay products; I have extremely sensitive skin and have never had a problem with them. (I also refuse to spend outrageous money on cosmetics, so I like that Almay is available in discount stores.)

When I had bad acne, only Almay cosmetics kept it from getting worse. When I got rid of the acne, I stopped wearing so much makeup. I sometimes don't wear any makeup.

10. topical retinoic acid will cure both the wrinkles and the acne...
... but you'll have to follow the directions carefully if you want to avoid a bad reaction.

As far as non-prescription stuff, I'd look for something containing magnesium l-ascorbyl phosphate. This is a vitamin C derivative that retains l-ascorbic acid's demonstrated effect on collagen synthesis, but (unlike pure ascorbic acid) remains stable in an ordinary lotion formula, and is effective at a pH that won't irritate your skin.

Oh, and you might find this link worth checking out: smartskincare.com is a non-commercial (no skin products for sale), science-focused site that is interesting and very informative. The guy who runs it seems pretty helpful about answering people's questions, if they don't find what they're looking for in his articles.

40. Acne is usually caused by improper cleansing. Stop using soap, if that is
what you already use.

Olay does in fact make the very very best over the counter skin care products... using a years old lotion did you no favors.

Olay makes a fantastic cleanser with tiny scrubbies, very gentle, but thorough. Alterate that daily with the mild medicated scrub by Swiss Formula. Wash with the scrub at the end of the day, and moisturize, and wash with the mild stuff in the morning and moisturize.

Moisturize with the Olay products, the beauty fluid is fantastic, with the eye cream.

If you have an actual acne rash on your face, it could well be a topical yeast infection, especially if it's itchy, and you should treat it with a basic topic antibiotic or yeast infection treatment. Yes, that's what I said. Good old vagisil. Yeast is yeast. Our skins can get a yeast infection too.

I used to spend hundreds per month on the best skin care stuff on the planet, I tried them ALL. It was when I stopped using soap, and after much testing and trying, found this particular combination, that my budget for skin care shrank to less than a hundred a year.

I had serious acne too... and like you, broke out at the drop of a hat... I was covered in crunchy zits until 3 years ago. Now, I got nuthin... it really, really works.

28. You are SO right.
I slathered on sunscreen like it was going out of fashion the few times I was able to get out this summer. In the fall and winter during water aerobics, I didn't wear sunscreen and actually got BURNED. I'm thinking I should wear sunscreen if it's sunny--even in the winter.

Nothing makes a person's skin age as fast as too much sun.

39. I learned that after living in South Florida most of my life.
My mother and several of my friends had skin cancer from baking in the tropical sun. So living in an area like South Florida, I soon discovered that sunscreen is your skin's best friend. I live in North Georgia now. but sunscreen is still part of my daily regimen. My moisturizer and my makeup both contain sunscreen. I am 67 years old, but my skin is still in fairly good shape. It would be better if I didn't smoke.

14. Wow! Lots of suggestions!
I'll have to look things over.

I agree about sunscreen and only applying moisturizers around my eyes.

I got rid of my acne problem several years ago by using Proactiv products. After my skin cleared up, I stopped using them every day so I still have a shitload, probably enough to last until my skin dries up. :)

I'll have a look at your suggestions. Thanks!!!

21. I was just posting it
I found a place called Cosmetic Company Store which is the Estee Lauder outlet stores (Estee Lauder is a very blue company and includes Estee Lauder, Clinque, MAC, Bobby Brown, Prescriptives and a host of other names). The Skin Idealist is actually more of a skin smoother but can be kinda price at $78/2oz bottle (that'll last me for about 3-4 months). But at the outlets I can get the same bottle for $50 - much more affordable (well until I end up buying 2 more Mac Lip Glosses that I really didn't need but loved the color)

Estee Lauder is a bit high-end but their Skin Idealist works wonders along with their Future perfection (anti-wrinkle).

But my pale skin gets kinda blochy so I use Alveeno's moisteriser for 'distressed' skin. Helps even out the tone.

what you eat, getting enough sleep, not drinking too much or smoking. Stress can also play a big factor in how your skin looks. Don't spend a fortune on any fancy line because genes and what you do and DON'T do will play a more important part than if you eat crap, party all the time and do other tuff like that and then plunk down big $$$ for an expensive cream. Creams cannot undo behavior and diet.

31. Finals?
You must be a young woman. When I was high school, college aged I was more concerned with makeup, looking good, etc. Now I am 47 and my main concern is feeling healthy. I am hitting the gym too and getting on a regular walking schedule after the holidays are over. Lucky for me, I have good genes too.. No wrinkles or sagging yet. But I would gladly have them rather than feel awful or be in bad shape. :-)

45. I am 26 and getting to this realization ... not to be cheeky, but...
1. Stay out of the sun.
2. Drink lots of water.
3. Wear non-oily moisturizer.
4. Don't smoke or drink a lot.
5. Eat your veggies.

I think that's about all you can do. As for myself, I am feeling quite stupid for all those hours spent out in the sun with no sunscreen back in my teens.... :( Two summers ago my freckles, which always appeared after I'd been in the sun for a bit and then went away, came out while I was on a lovely afternoon bike ride - and NEVER left. Now they're age spots, I guess...?

46. and, for the record
All I have ever been able to use is Dove - anything else breaks my face out. I am currently using Dove's moisturizer, too, which I am largely happy with. That's all I do. Occasionally, if I am feeling a bit oily or on the verge of a breakout (like right before my period), I will use Cetaphil before going to bed. Also, I usually don't wash my face at night - despite all those lectures from almost all famous women and beauty writers ("NEVER go to sleep with your makeup on!"), I find that my face is much more sensitive and breaks out more when I wash twice a day. I use liquid foundation, mascara on my top lashes, and lip gloss most days. Occasionally will put on some eyeliner (in which case I DO wash it off before bed) or blush. Eye shadow for special occasions only. And not always then.

So there! Stick it, beauty industry! :P

47. Cetaphil
I've been using it for about 15 years - since I have rosacea, my dermatologist recommended the cleanser (glycerine) for washing instead of soap. In addition to the cleanser, their moisturizer is nice and thick and cool and soothing. Both are cheap and don't smell (good or bad). Supposedly, both are non-comedegenic.

Worth a try - a big drugstore will have a small bottle for <$5. I've read that a lot of models use it, and I believe it.
