Position: That Madonna was actually quite good in "Evita"
Even if it started her down the path of her affected English accent.

Discuss.

3. I won't argue
She was also good in Desperately Seeking Susan and A League of Their Own.

And, to continue defending her, I don't think it was Evita that started the affected English accent thing. I think it was living in England. Some people naturally start to sound like the people around them. It is kind of weird, I think, but not intentionally pompous.

5. She spoke with a little accent in "Evita," and spoke in it
while at an awards show during the filming.

However, I think she was very good in "Evita," and in the other two movies you mentioned. She's like Mark Walberg -- you have to stay within her comfort zone, I think.

18. You took the words out of my mouth
It happened to me too (the accent)

Madonna has done some movies that were real turkeys (Who's that Girl, Shanghai Surprise), but with good material, she's not the horrible actress she's made out to be.

I thought she was great in those movies you mentioned too.

4. No, the crazy accent started during Evita
I remember it well. She was taking voice lessons. However, she dropped the fake English accent for a while, but then it came back.

I thought she was good in all three of those movies, also.

6. She's okay. I didn't like Evita too much. No dialogue at all? Hell naw!
She's WAY more talented than half the "real" actresses in Hollywood today. She's alright, just picks crappy projects or something...not sure.

But Evita was eh. I couldn't believe that, no dialogue! WTF!

8. YES!!!
I said from the very beginning, when it was taking YEARS to cast that role, that she was the only person who could carry it off.

I thought Patty LuPone was an incredible Evita, but there's no way she would have been cast in the movie version--too unknown. I thought Madonna was great--but Evita's one of my favorite musicals, so I'm kinda biased. I used to play the Broadway cast album and sing all the parts--I knew the whole thing.

11. She looked good
and she sounded good. No dialogue, which was good for her. She isn't the best actress around.

12. I thought she was good too...
and I'm pretty much a major Madonna hater.

It was an all around well-made film. Too bad the material wasn't worthy of the effort.

14. If I were hanging out in London as much as she does...
I'd have a combination Oklahoman/English accent. Sounds fucked up, but I pick up on people's accents and start talking like them.
It's normal.

15. I thought she was quite good in Evita, and I usually don't like musicals.
I'm not a fan of singing dialogue, since most people don't sing their conversations. However, Don't Cry For Me, Argentina will always be one of my favorites.

I do admire Madonna for her perseverance and her willingness to reinvent herself when she chooses. She seems quite happy now, all married with a family, and that's a good thing that she's enjoying the life she's made for herself.

16. She is VERY good, but Banderas is fantastic
The reverse of "Phantom of the Opera," where Emmy Rossum is fantastic and Gerald Butler is...good. Well, more than OK.

I've never seen Madonna do better acting than in the last 15 minutes of "Evita." I don't know what Alan Parker did to get that performance out of her, but it's pretty damn amazing.

17. I agree about her performance. But the accent...
I don't think it's totally affected. I lived there for awhile and apparently came home with an accent I didn't even know I had. It wasn't intentional and I wasn't even aware of it until people started asking me where I was from. Madonna has always had a "different" way of speaking (look at some old interviews- She articulates her words very "sharply"), and, to my ears, doesn't really sound THAT British, just a little.

Some people are like sponges when immersed in another language or dialect.
