WORST 1970's rock band?
IMO, one 70's band always did suck, and always will suck.

Steve Miller Band. :nuke:

10. Well I always liked that group
Jungle Love and Jet Airliner was the swingingest stuff on the radio in my little town.

What I always hated in the 1970s was Rod Stewart, but is that rock?

Cheeseburgers.....

Steve Miller was only about 15 when he started his long climb to success....

Go on, take the money and run...

Your Cash Ain't Nothin' But Trash....

In an era when groups were trying to be heavier, I'm not talkin' Metal here, Steve Miller was a breath of Fresh Air...

He was having fun, playin' fun music and had a whole lot of snappy songs and great riffs....

that the Steve Miller Band was awful. It is not debatable among intellectually honest people.

I save that for nighttime. Are you telling me I have my decades mixed up? When you've lived through as many decades as I have, that's not too surprising. Maybe .38 Special was an '80s band, but they sounded like a '70s band, a la Lynyrd Skynyrd, of which I am also not a huge fan, although I like them a bit better. Whatever....

UPDATE! I looked them up on the Internet, and they were formed in 1975. So there -- they are TOO a '70s band. Apologize now.

19. The guy that wrote "Afternoon Delight" also wrote "Take me home,
Country Roads". I actually met him once when I was working at a public tv station in Washington, DC.

I found this info:

This is a "double entendre" song inspired by the late-afternoon appetizer menu at Clyde's Of Georgetown (in Washington, DC). The other meaning is Diddy sex. (thanks, Insider - Rockville , MD)
This was the only hit for The Starland Vocal Band, who won the Grammy for Best New Artist of 1976.
Despite having only this one hit, they were given their own TV show called The Starland Vocal Band in 1977. An unknown comic named David Letterman appeared on the show.
The Starland vocal band was Bill Danoff, his now ex-wife Taffy Nivert Danoff, Jon Carroll and his now-ex wife Margot Chapman. The group split up after their 4th album.
Under the name Fat City, the group sang backup on John Denver's "Take Me Home, Country Roads." Bill and Taffy Nivert co-wrote the song.
At Clyde's they have a gold record from this song hanging in the restaurant.
Bill Danoff has his own restaurant in Washington DC called The Starland Cafe. (thanks, Insider - Rockville , MD)
This was used in two 2004 movies that were set in the '70s: Anchorman and Starsky and Hutch. (thanks, Billy - Pittsburgh, PA)

Then he died. It's still a pretty emotional song for me.

And it is far from the WORST ever. Once Rick Astley hit the airwaves, all previous worst songs ever were given a reprieve.

12. BadCo or Grand Funk
Two garage bands that should've stayed in the garage.

Lesser-known: Bloodrock. They had a minor hit with "D.O.A." but these guys were awful. They actually released an album, "Bloodrock II," with mistakes. I can only guess that they took so many takes in the studio that they finally said "Screw it."

71. I liked a few of Grand Funk's singles, but I never realized how awful they
....really were until tonight. Deep Tracks (on XM radio) played a Grand Funk cover of "Gimme Shelter" (which I had never heard before) and God it was horrible! Sid Vicious could have played a better bass line, I swear this fucker was playing one string through the entire song. Definitely stands out compared to the excellent work Bill Wyman did on the original.

Another one hit wonder song I liked was "Sufficient Breathless" by Captain Beyond, in which one of the members was a former member of Iron Butterfly.

The 70's was my favorite decade of "classic rock". I liked the 60's and parts of the 80's, but after that, I haven't been to compelled to attend many rock concerts. However, I did see Dave Matthews 2 weeks ago. :-)

The first album i bought with my own money was Wheels of Fire. That was their third album, and had one disk that was live. It turned me around about rock music, since The Beatles were about all i liked until 1968. (Grew up with Jazz.) That live performance, with all the improvisation, turned my head around.

65. This is hard for me
Rational or irrational, I have a strong love for almost all the music released in this often-mocked decade. I can't even blame it on the blinding effects of nostalgia as I wasn't even alive for one minute of the 1970's. If I had to pick something, I'd go with Ted Nugent, though I don't think he exactly qualifies as a "band."

Now worst 1980's rock band would be a different story altogether...

Like you, I love even most of the bad Seventies music. Frankly, I've always envied people who got to grow up back then. I'm convinced that they had more fun. And even bad 70s music had more life in it than that irritating, forgettable crap I grew up on.

opinion: Lynyrd Skynyrd. I am so tired of them. To this day, that is all these rednecks play on the radio around here (in NC) besides country. I'd rather listen to nails on a chalkboard, a pencil tapping, repetitive phlegm snorting, water dripping, or any other form of aural psychological warfare than hear one more Lynyrd Skynyrd song in my life.

that the Skynard songs are some of the most enjoyable to play. They get quite old listening to them but I have aqlways enjoyed playing their songs.

to play them any more. When I first started learning how to play, I was taught a lot of their stuff, but grew tired of it way too quickly. Now, the Beatles stuff I was taught is still great, I guess, because I like their music to begin with, but not Skynyrd. I'm sick of them. I wish I could keep leftover strains of damn Freebird from causing me nightmares some nights.

201. It's Also Not Very Interesting To Play
One of the guys was quite good (Al Something?). The other two were just Richrathians, with the "diddla-diddla" triplets, over and over and over and over again.

I suppose for someone learning to play lead, it's stuff that gets one to understand the neck a bit, but i wouldn't play that stuff now with a gun to my head.

137. AAIIIEEEEE!!!!
Focus was an excellent band! "Hocus Pocus" was only a small piece of what they were capable of...Jan Akkerman is an amazing guitarist and Thijs Van Leer is one of the most tasteful organists and flautists in rock, a musician's musician. The two segued pieces "Focus 3" and "Answers? Questions! Questions? Answers!" are pure genius, especially on "Live At The Rainbow".

And whoever mentioned Emerson, Lake & Palmer needs to be flogged with a Leslie cable! :D

Heck, I like a bit of Steve Miller too, specifically the album version of "Fly Like An Eagle"...there's some scary B-3 work on that cut. Styx had their moments too (though in later years had more than a few turkeys in the repertoire....)

138. At least KISS put on a good show.
The best album they ever made was Alive! (the first one) Put on the studio version of anything on the live album, and it leaves you wanting.

Then you get to the next three (Love Gun, Destroyer, and Rock And Roll Over), and you see what a really good producer can do with even a mediocre band.

Then they got REALLY commercial, to the point where people soon got tired of them. Merchandising run amok (but the pinball game rocked). TV specials (that really sucked). And then there were the four solo albums. And Dynasty. Eww.

Then they replaced half the band, took off their makeup (big mistake), and became yet another screeching 80's hair band in an era where they were already too plentiful. Put Animalize against anything Twisted Sister, Motley Crue, or Def Leppard did in the same era, and KISS loses. There's no contest.

Then they put the makeup back on, hired back the original members as temps, and started playing Super Bowls, writing books, and doing Holiday Inn Express commercials. Um. Okay.

129. Oh you did not just go there...
sure Take It on the Run is cheesy, but there's few rock songs as uplifting as Roll with the Changes. And Riding the Storm Out is sadly underrated. Also any band that names an album You Can Tune a Piano But You Can't Tuna Fish with a fish with a tuning fork sticking out of its mouth on the cover? Genius. Ok so being from Illinois, like REO, I'm a bit biased.

144. I was going to go with them until I saw Steely Dan listed above.
REO is a strong second, though. They might have been better if the lead singer could sing even a little. Who can ever forgive the classic "...heard it from a friend who-o-oo" where he attempts to climb a scale and instead sounds like he was unexpectedly goosed by the lead guitarist (if you can call someone who can't play guitar a guitarist).

To quote one of my favorite lines in a movie: A little musicality, please.

though their first album was without Steve Perry. He came along in late 77. Wherein Journey went from a prog rock band to a pop-rock/arena rock band. And started selling millions of records. Funny thing is they were already selling out huge arenas before that.
