To be honest they had that wall of sound guitar thing going, so everything was pretty much loud and ringing.

I loved that sound though, that wailing ringing distortion that everyone used in the 80's. I used to know what that effect used to be called.

yes, it's true, the jesus and mary chain that sucked and sold out and wound up on mtv was the 90s, but the jesus and mary chain of psychocandy was 19eighty fucking five.

(but for the record, i'm just being ornery, and i like the the sucked/sold out/mtv jmc, if by that you mean honey's dead, which had far gone and out ...)

but they really got good in the 90s. Honey's Dead is a great album, and then there was that whole give and take with the lady from mazzy star ... but, yeah, they were around (underground) in the 80s. And even though psychocandy can be kind of a hard listen, it also has some really great moments (like "just like honey").

i've still got all their early stuff (somewhere ;)) and there's some really great stuff there ... i know it was one of their "commercial" songs, but "far gone and out" STILL sounds fresh to me ...

...but since Yes without Jon Anderson was a joke, they soon split off into Asia. Except Trevor Horn didn't want to sing anymore so they got the guy from King Crimson. And the drummer from ELP. Meanwhile the remaining Yes members attempted to work with Jimmy Page and Robert Plant in what was called the "XYZ" band. Which went nowhere because Page was strung out on heroin.

So much for "English bands of the 70's playing musical chairs in 1980", volume one.

ever - and no I am not on the magic stuff , I don't consider their music rock but I do consider them to be one of the most successful bands in the world . Oh dear I have gotten started ... anyways - to each their own but they are my ultimate fave .

Kool and Gang on the other hand - damn ... I remember liking their music when I was a little kid , now I just shudder .

I was a Duranie in the 80's. I still have all of their cassettes. Now I have all of their CD's. My husband thinks I'm trying to relive my childhood. Plus, John Taylor . . .

If I'm not mistaken, "The Chauffeur," in my opinion, far and away, their best song, was penned in 1979. Which is kick ass as all get out for 1979. That's just what I remember, though -- I could be wrong -- but I think that's what it said in the "Rio" liner notes.

I can't decide if you're joking or not, but I'm oft tempted to think they were the best electronica band of the 80s, but, unlike a lot of others, they got so popular that they don't have that "flying-under-the-radar" cred. I remember them fondly, however, and they are one of my favorite bands, for nostalgia, if nothing else.

Edit: I should make it clear, however, that I don't really think DD was the greatest 1970s act, but they were ahead of their time most likely right around 1981.

I'm taking this post way too seriously. I'm going to stop now.
