1. Unbelievably good.
Still thinking about it. Heartbreaking. And who knew Heath Ledger could act?

16. The story and the acting
I was taken aback by how good Heath was -- I had no idea. And it's the kind of movie that stays with you (at least me) for days. I'm still a bit heartbroken.

And to boot, the cinamatography was amazing

8. I am a grandmother, but Heath, you light my fire!
I knew it when I first saw him in "The Patriot" -- he's had his ups and downs, but "Brokeback Mountain" is a fascinating movie. They were lined up for four screens playing the movie EVERY 1/2 HOUR in Portland, Oregon. And that's on Friday MORNING!

9. The sex scenes are done in dim light, very tastefully (no pun) ...

There is one long shot of both men jumping into the river naked (I assume it was them, but there were plenty of stunt backup folks). There is also one quick shot of the lovely Anne Hathaway's beautiful breasts.

Director Ang Lee just told them to do whatever they thought they should do and he filmed that, after blocking it out. Lee said he felt very self-conscious about giving them anything in particular to do or say.

It's a sad and poignant story -- although it was a fictional short story by Annie Proulx, another similar but true event played out tragically about a year later.

Please don't give away the ending.

You can read all about it at:

Wishing you hearty, healthy, and happy holidays!

14. Ang Lee, the Taiwanese American director, gets wonderful performances...

the photography is fantastic (no, it's not Wyoming, it's Canada...) excellent pacing. Dialogue is spare, and I decided to get infrared audio assistance devices (headset) so I could hear.

This low budget movie may leave a big cinematic footprint. There are raves EVERYWHERE -- someone called this "Love Story 2005" -- you'll be able to relate, even if you're "straight"!

Wishing you a happy, healthy, hearty holiday season!

In peace,

Radio_Lady (Movie Reviewer in Oregon)

11. Yes, it is in limited release. I don't know what plans they have to
Edited on Fri Dec-16-05 09:54 PM by Radio_Lady
open it wide. I'm not able to access it in the ZIP code of your city.

You might try calling the theater chains or the smaller "art houses" to see if they've picked it up now or if they will in the future.

The movie is rated R, of course.

Wishing you happy, hearty, healthy holidays!

In peace,

12. I can't either,
I've been checking though. I'm sure one of the arthouses will play it though. It's too good for them to pass up.

This kind of movie is right up my alley. I just love films with gritty emotional honesty, even if the characters don't want to admit it.

Thanks, RadioLady. And I hope you have a beautiful Holiday Season too.

17. I only saw the preview
But it gave away the movie. What is so romantic about adultery anyway?

20. For some reason, the adultery aspect isn't that striking to me.
And this is coming from a guy that's pretty hypersensitive about adultery. I don't know - maybe it's just recognition that it'd probably be nearly impossible for these guys to "come out" in their situation that the adultery part doesn't bother me. I haven't seen the movie, and won't likely unless I'm with someone that really wants to go see it, but I don't think that would bother me much.

Now, the movie "Closer" is another story altogether. That movie sucked.

21. I think in this situation, everybody's a victim
The two guys who obviously love each other, but can't be together in that time and place. And that fact in turn hurts the women they eventually wind up with and by extention, their children.

None of the people characters is the villan here.

IMHO the adultery is a result of, a symptom, not a direct cause of the hurt.

18. It was awesome.
The audience gave it a standing O when it ended. Of course, I was in a theatre in a very gay part of town, but it was a fabulous movie.
