I LOVE DU!!

Thanks to all for a great community!!:grouphug: :loveya: :grouphug:

Props to Frylock for hipping me to this site.

Shout out to all those I met at the Sept. 24 March Against the War here in DC.

And much admiration to the Skinner, Earl G, and Elad.

4. I thought about posting something profound in GD:Politics,
but it is way too late to think of something smart, and I didn't want to get castigated for saying to the GDers, "hey, everyone, it's my 1000th post."

Did you see the way people pounced on the GD:Chat suggestion that Skinner had up a week or too ago? I did not want to be a victim of that venom. :scared:

So I came to the Lounge.

I think I will have a cocktail...

I was in the DU Liberty and Justice for all shirt, and I went to the meetup at RFD's after the march.

Here's a photo: http://pictures.hatproductions.com/friends/20051210Santarchy/Pages/IMG_6001.html

Love your smilies by the way.

16. I stopped in to RDF's later on that evening.
I volunteered to be part of security for the march, it was a very long day. I felt the need for a shower and change of clothes before being around other DUers.

BTW your link isn't working.

Congrats to you and please come back to the Lounge - if you ever need help figuring out the silly jokes here, feel free to ask...

What does it mean when people put " . . . " in the Subject line?

I have been dying to figure that out for a few months.

13. Use square brackets instead of angle. well, for me it means I have
a graphic or comment, but can't for the life of me think of an interesting subject line... don't know what it means for others.

This is one for which I think there is no rule, even an unwritten one. I use it when I'm posting something, often a silly graphic or one-liner to someone I am having a humorous back-and-forth with on a thread, that is better off without a subject line. In other words, the image or quick retort speaks for itself, but I don't want to put it in the subject line and ruin the surprise!

That was a good question!

:D

Obviously, I can't call you the first part of your screen name as a nickname or that would be an insult.

I find that it can hard to keep track of folks on DU except on the very tiny forums (like the DC forum, which is lucky to get one new post a week). Just when I think I am getting to know folks, I don't post for a week or several and when I come back, either the people are all different or they have forgotten me. I guess that is the great thing about having so many Democrats (now if we can just win an eff'ing election . . . ).

Thanks for the welcome! :pals:

57. Columbia Heights
Recently moved there after two years on Cap Hill. As I hear the story, both neighborhoods are much improved over where they were in the 90s.

I really enjoy the central location of the Heights: walk to Mr. P and Adams-Morgan; 1 metro stop to U Street!

58. Fun. I lived in Columbia Heights for the first year I was there.
1983. I lived at 3449 Holmead Place, NW.

I wonder if the neighborhood Giant has finally been upgraded.

Used to ride the 14th Street bus downtown past this massive open-air heroin market, hundreds of men milling about at the corner of 14th & U. It was like the floor of the stock exchange. I liked Columbia Heights even back in the rough, pre-Metro days, though I did get dragged into Malcolm X part and pretty brutally mugged by a few kids once. I loved walking down 16th Street to my bakery job at 5 in the morning during the winter, past the Moonie church, past all the embassies, White House and the dome of the Jefferson Memorial glowing in the distance.

Then I lived in south Shaw for about 8 years, on Ridge Street, between 4th and 5th and M and N, in a little civil war era shack. Ate a lot at AV Ristorante Italiano, and loved killing time on weekends at the Smithsonian, going to the Hirschorn or to the great free movies at the National Gallery of Art.

Wrapped up my tour of duty in an apartment building a few blocks south of Chevy Chase Circle.

I want to come back for a week-long eating tour some time next year. There are so many restaurants that I miss.

I think you live in a great place.

the Giant has definitely been upgraded and they are in process of building a new center anchored by Target. Either way, I'm not a neighborhod snob, I like that it is still considered a marginal neighborhood. When neighborhoods get too "fixed up," they become all corporate and lose their personalities.

Some of my favorite restaurants in town include Finemondo, Sento Sesto, Marx Cafe, and Coppi Organic Pizza on U street.

i just went to Stetson's on U Street for the first time last night. It is a pretty cool bar.

And don't forget, as we were recently told by Tom DeLay on the House floor:

"Jesus said blessed are the peacemakers. What he meant was blessed aare the soldiers, for they MAKE peace. He did not mean blessed are the peaceful."

To sum up:
1) War is peace.
2) Tom DeLay has a direct line to Jesus.
