How low is your heat set right now?
And what are you wearing?

I was flabbergasted by the utility bill (even though we were at 68 when we were home and 60 during the day and night), so I dialed the thermostat back even more.

I have on two pair of socks, slippers, sweatpants, turtleneck and fleece zip up. I was still cold, so I threw on my heavy terry bath robe over it all. It's quite a fashion statement to say the least.

I was thinking about getting an electric space heater, but not sure what or where to buy it.

1. my thermostat says 63 degrees
however a) I have a drafty old house and b) I am sitting in this easy chair with a oil space heater (Lakewood model 7101) running at 900 watts to my left and a candle burning to my right.
I am wearing two pairs of socks, shoes, jeans and two pairs of long johns, a hooded sweatshirt with hood up, and three more sweatshirts. My toes are cold. I think I am going to put my boots on.

Edited on Sat Dec-17-05 02:14 PM by RebelOne
I have one window open and two space heaters set on low and I am wearing a Tweety sweatshirt. I love winter, so 44 degrees is just fine with me. But of course, I live in North Georgia, so we only get extreme cold temperatures occasionally, where it will go into the teens or single digits very rarely.

5. So, how are you trying to stay warm?
And, I posted this because I'm getting in disagreements with other members of my household about how cold I have been keeping it. I just wanted to see if I'm the only one. We're not exactly poor, but who can afford to pay more than $1,000 for heat and electricity for three months?

27. baking does seem to make a difference
I've been baking for several days now and you do feel warmer in the kitchen and in general.

Ours is set at 66-67 now, but we turn it down at night to 60?

I have a fleece top over a t-shirt and fleece socks... and it isn't quite as cold here as it has been. The Nov. gas bill was only $87.00, not sure how we managed that. I was expecting it to be much higher. I have used those electric heaters that look like radiators, but they use quite a bit of electricity, also expensive.

I feel comfortable, my h has on just a t-shirt, and my kid seems oblivious... he is like a furnace anyway. But there have been days when I was pretty cold... I do a lot of work at home in the less heated "computer room."

11. Well, we haven't had our heat on...well...at all...
We live in a 24 story building on the 11th floor. We don't have to have our heat on. this place is well insulated and there's all kinds of heat seeping in from under the door. It never gets cold in here. As a matter of fact, we have to, more often, crack the patio door because it gets to hot. I'm wearing gray lounge capris, a yellow tshirt and there's a fan blowing on me from my right. And it's 36 degrees outside.

22. 62 degrees w/ space heater and steam vaporizer in the living room
That's how I'm getting by.

You can get a small space heater that won't cost much and it will really help warm up your living area. The steam vaporizer or even boiling water on the stove also helps.

One time my furnace went out for a few days and I kept my house comfortable with nothing but my electrice oven, boiling pots of water and a space heater.

I don't run the space heater at night but I do keep the vaporizer running.

I'm doing everything I can and dreading my first winter gas bill. Good luck. :)

We have a space heater in the bedroom (an eheater) and one in the office.

The best heater in the house is the eheater: www.eheat.us. The bedroom gets so warm sometimes at night (or else perimenopause is whipping my butt) that I have to be out from under the covers.

I'm wearing Happy Bunny pajama pants, a long sleeved knit cotton top, wool socks and danskos. I need to go work out, then shower, then go to the grocery store, but I have been lazy today.

36. that's humorous to those of us in the Midwest (but not trying to be rude)
Last April, I went to Phoenix for a conference. It was 82 deg when I landed at 4:00pm. I changed from pants to shorts. When I got to where I was supposed to be, there were 2 other midwesterners in shorts. The natives said it was cold when the temp dipped to 70 by the end of the evening. And I was still comfortable in my shorts. I tend to be very cold natured, but have adjusted to midwestern temps.

Gas bill will be high again this month, but as we sleep upstairs, it's not too bad at night as long as we wear flannels and have a medium blanket and comforter. Sometimes I use a heating pad because my injured knee needs a little more warmth.

Still considering covering my windows in the back rooms though, since we don't raise the windows back there. I try to open the drapes on our living room windows since they face south.

And isn't it interesting that gasoline went up 40 cents in the past 2-3 weeks. :bounce:

I lived in Nebraska until 2 months ago. My family still lives there, they're dealing with paying for their heating bills...so I'm really not trying to downplay the problems that heating costs are creating in cold climates.

On the other hand, this is my first non-winter and I'm darn well enjoying it. :)

32. 63-64 - upstairs and 68 - downstairs
Edited on Sat Dec-17-05 06:49 PM by Breeze54
I keep it at 68 downstairs....usually!
Sometimes when I'm cooking (using the oven),I lower the downstairs thermostat.
I try to keep a pot of boiling/simmering water to raise the humidity,
hence the temp!
But my bedroom (upstairs) does get very chilly! Poor wall insulation.
Sometimes I turn up the upstairs thermostat just to take the chill off that room,
then I lower it again.
It's 35 degree's outside here right now but will be colder in a few hours!
My heat and hot water are included in my lease but I still conserve,
as much as possible.
I'm wearing a cotton flannel pullover shirt, leggings, socks and suede shoes!
It's just right in here right now!
I have all hardwood floors and that tends to make it chillier in here at night.
I do add a fleece vest later when it gets colder!
There is a draft from my dining room window, at my back.
Especially when the wind is blowing and it's snowing!
Brrrr!
Oh yeah...and beer!! Helps keep me warm! lol
:P

the central heat on. I wear my flannel PJ's, and a fleece cardigan over that, and just snuggle under my down comforter and a heavy acrylic blanket. If needed, I'd turn on the little heat dish I have in the room. But with my fleece cardigan and my blankets, I haven't need to use the little heater yet.

My mom is doing the same. She's not heating up the entire house because the bill would be too much. So she just heats her bedroom with a little heater.

43. 62 N. Cal. Buy electric matress pads before space heaters!!!
Oh and I have on a thermal shirt, sweats, and wool socks. I took off my sweater and fleece pullover when I just now had a big bowl of Miso soup.

The worst part of the cold is that it is very hard for me to work up any enthuseasm for washing dishes in long sleeves. Yuckko!!! Gotta do them before bedtime though.

About the matress pads. A matress pad heats the matress a little (it's insulation) then heats whatever is on top of it; you. A space heater is going to heat all of the air in the room before you get warm. The radiant kind with parabolic reflecters should NEVER be used as they are a major source of fires.

57. I, too, just about had a HEART ATTACK when I got my gas bill
For some reason, I thought it wouldn't happen to me. At any rate, I've dialed back the three downstairs systems (we have a boiler), to 65 during the day, and 62, at night, which keeps the temperature, oddly, at about 69 degrees in the day -- don't know how much, at night. The upstairs, I keep at 60, at all times.

Last night, I was so cold that I wanted to die. Right now, I'm chilling, hardcore, and I have on a wool snow cap, a pair of cotton pants, a long-sleeved cotton t-shirt, with an ankle-length sweater dress over all of it, and, additionally, a zip-up sweater. Last night, I had all of this, and a sleeping bag and another blanket, and I was still cold.

I'm trying this experiment out -- my answer was a lot different, last week, when this same question was asked. I don't know how long this is going to last. I get COLD, now -- so cold that I get sick from being chilled. We'll see what happens.

I haven't turned on the pilot light yet....the thermometer in the house says it's 70 degrees in here. It's afternoon.
This part of SoCal...I am hoping I won't be turning on the heater this year, at all.

60. I have had my window open for a couple of days..
Google says it is 33 degrees F. I imagine it is slightly warmer in my room and I have on a hoodie and a old pair of Dickies. The rest of the house is significantly warmer (The heater is set at 66F, I think).

62. the best heaters
are the Delonghi "radiator" type ..... they don't dry the air out (as badly) and it's damn near impossible for one to catch anything on fire. And they're pretty economical.

Oh yeah, and they last forever!

64. It's off right now
and has been a good part of the day. Wood burning FP keeping the LR at 70, colder in rest of house. But the LR is where the teevee and the football are. We'll need to turn the gas central heat on again soon, it's in the 20's outside and the FP won't handle it alone. Wearing flannel sweats and fake sheepskin lined moccasin style slippers that come up around the ankle.

Mr 'pede must have made a pass by the thermostat. The heat just cranked up.

66. 63 grad for the thermostat
I don't know how accurate it is. Though I'm in an apartment block, so I suspect there's insulation from the surrounding units. I'll turn it down to 50 grad for sleeping. I'm wearing shorts and t-shirt, but have a wide comfort zone. Yesterday, I was pedalling in shorts. There are still plow piles of snow about. Some chappie pulled up beside me in a car and said it made him cold just looking at me.

Yet in my building, there are eejits who crank the heat up, then keep the window open for fresh air. Rich, snot-nosed, Georgetown students.

68. We have buildingwide heat
When it's on it's ON and when it's off it's OFF.

It was OFF earlier so I was wearing long johns, ski pants, cashmere sweater with a sweatshirt over that, and two pair wool socks. Worked great except for my hands.
