Do people realize who sang the sports arena song "Rock and Roll"?
You know the one, it goes "Rock and Rooooolll....Hey!" during time outs and such. Everyone pumps their fists and shout "Hey!" in unison.

Do you think people realize that Gary Glitter, the man wrote and performed the song, was convicted in the UK in 1999 for child porn possession? He was also charged and acquited of sex with a 14 year old. He became a pariah in the UK, then moved to Cambodia, but was expelled once their government found out he was there. Just last month he was arrested in Viet Nam on charges of having sex with a 12 year old and a 15 year old, and is now in jail there awaiting a trial.

So, what do you think? When people are at a sporting event, pumping their fists and shouting "Hey!", do they realize that this is the guy the are singing along with?

13. Chuck Berry is a world-class pervert to be sure!
Anyone who installs video cameras inside the ladies' room toilets of his restaurant has crossed the line to world-class pervert status. There's no topping that one.

Yes, his music is great, but I must admit that I think of "My Ding-A-Ling" a little differently now. :P

2. It's a sports anthem.
I don't think most people shouting "Hey!!!" along with the song even know who Gary Glitter is. I mean, that song was like his only hit. He's a glam rock one hit wonder. And he happens to be a disgusting human being.

4. Sadly, no
He wasn't a one-hit wonder over here in the UK. Had a lot of chart success and is quite famous.

5. That's my point, that no one knows....
I just think it's kind of funny, the thought of a bunch of people singing along with a world class pedophile who is facing the possibility of a Vietnamese firing squad.

Every time I'm at a sports event I wonder about this and laugh about all of the people who would be totally horrified to know the details about him.

The other thing is that he makes money every time his song gets played, so the sports teams are giving him an income he wouldn't otherwise have.

14. Yup!
That's how they deal with pedophiles over there. He claims he was just sharing a bed with them.

Good one, Gary!

3. And?
People sing along to a one-hit wonder song...feh. If he'd gotten a Nobel Prize I might be more angry.

7. Gary Glitter was huge in the UK
My point is that he makes money every time it gets played at an arena. Also I think most people would freak out if they knew who they were singing along with.

6. I doubt most people even know the name of it

I, on the other hand, still have the single (that's 45 rpm of vinyl, kiddies) around here someplace. Bought it circa 1971.

I also wonder if people know they're singing the tune of an old British drinking song when they sing the national anthem.

On edit: The Ramones' "Blitzkrieg Bop" has also become popular at sporting events for its "Hey, ho! Let's go!" I wonder if fans or team brass know the rest of the lyrics.

They're forming in a straight line
They're going through a tight wind
The kids are losing their minds
The Blitzkrieg Bop

They're piling in the back seat
They're generating steam heat
Pulsating to the back beat
The Blitzkrieg Bop.

Hey ho, let's go
Shoot 'em in the back now
What they want, I don't know
They're all revved up and ready to go

10. The same irony that accompanies "We Will Rock You"
I have a sly smirk on my face at a football or baseball game when "We Will Rock You" comes on and I wonder how many of the guys around me singing along know that the man who sung it originally sucked more cock than a garment district whore.

11. Me too!
Totally cracks me up every time.

Here's your sports anthem hero -- looks about as macho as Liza Minelli.

16. Don't they also do "YMCA?"
I bet The Village People could have given Freddie a run for his money in the cock-sucking department.
