The RetroLounge Daily Poem Thread (Sun 12/18/05)
The Hug

It was your birthday, we had drunk and dined
Half of the night with our old friend
Who'd showed us in the end
To a bed I reached in one drunk stride.
Already I lay snug,
And drowsy with the wine dozed on one side.

I dozed, I slept. My sleep broke on a hug,
Suddenly, from behind,
In which the full lengths of our bodies pressed:
Your instep to my heel,
My shoulder-blades against your chest.
It was not sex, but I could feel
The whole strength of your body set,
Or braced, to mine,
And locking me to you
As if we were still twenty-two
When our grand passion had not yet
Become familial.
My quick sleep had deleted all
Of intervening time and place.
I only knew
The stay of your secure firm dry embrace.

Thom Gunn

7. This is a sturdily lovely poem, my dear RetroLounge......
Here we have love without sex.....the pleasures of contact and security.

Most of marriage is like this, I think......

Sex being the over-the-top fireworks that keeps the flame of love going...

But the rest of the time, you need this platonic contact to provide the base.

Very nice.....thank you!

8. Beautiful.
I remember nights like that; wishing that every one could be like it, believing that one day they would be. "When our grand passion had not yet become familial."- However pedestrian the experience, it's still a haunting truth.

12. The reassuring touch
with no further demand or expectation, just the need and delight in the touch.

That's a wonderful thing to feel, especially to receive, because you can't demand it.

Thanks, RL.
