1. Sorry about that, a friend of mine paid $1500.
But that was a few years back, and it was for a minivan.

I don't know if that was plus labor or not though. :scared:

25. All cars run on used parts
Call transmission shops, junk yards, whatever. Some will install it and guarantee it for a little while anyways.

4. Are you sure
it is bad.

I ask this because of a car I was involved with (Was mine I gave it to my BIL).

I had the transmission replaced. (About $900) He had major problems with that transmission. I talked him into taking it to a local garage. There the mechanic replaced a cheap external part, did not charge him and never again any problem.

Suggestion..get more than two opinions.

Cuz it's a bunch o' money.

Sorry man. I agree though, with the poster who said get a few opinions. Finding people who *really* know their stuff and are also honest is not easy when it involves mechanics, but especially so with transmission mechanics. And it's not uncommon for the true prognosis to be better than you might fear when your car acts funky.

12. it's definateLy the tranny
it's possibLe the snapped cabLe (i feLt it snap - and the tow guy said as much too) can just be repLaced... but whiLe they were manuaLLy (under the hood) manipuLating the gears to get out of the weird spot i was stuck in, the dash was showing 'park'.. as weLL as the gears just kinda going where they wanted to after being forced into a gear.

*sigh*

thank god it's xmas or something.

14. Manipulating gears?
Strange. You do have an automatic transmission?

Tow truck would just tow from the end of the vehicle the drive shaft connects too or winch it up onto the flat bed break-back flatbed truck.

I had an automatic trans go while moving bout thirty MPH the smoke screen it laid down was impressive.

Good luck and get opinions.

Sounds like you just had a linkage break.

15. weLL
my car ended up perpendicuLar to a driveway-into-parking Lot... so without getting the car into gear and moving it to at Least face the driveway (it's a narrow, L-shaped driveway that opens into a parking Lot - i was at a 90d bLocking the driveway. my car shit the bed whiLe trying to puLL into a spot near the drive), the best he couLd do (if there wasn't a car in the spot next to the one i was trying to puLL into) was hook a chain to the side and start dragging.. then pushing.. then dragging to get the car turned around.

the drive and the Lot are very tiny - he couLdn't even get the tow truck aLL the way in. :?

and yes, an automatic. if i ever give up and go for a new car, maybe i shouLd go stick.

11. Depends entirely on the car...
.. most likely there are much better alternatives than actually buying a new transmission, which for any car will cost an arm and a leg.

You say something snapped? Was the trans working OK before? Was it the shifter cable? Gimme info.

the gears were acting a LittLe funny - putting in drive or reverse or etc, and the car wouLd be in neutraL (not grabbing anything) but it wasn't that much of an issue once i got a hang of the fact that it was happening; a nice hard break, and ride the cLick through each gear (if that makes sense?).

i was just doing a normaL 3 point turn, and when shifting (automatic) from reverse to drive, it just snapped, and i no Longer was abLe to switch gears. LuckiLy, the car went into park (i assume that's a safety thing instaLLed?) since i wouLd have had to sit there with a foot on the brake whiLe yeLLing for heLp.

so basicaLLy, the trans was working ok, a LittLe funny, but i was hoping i couLd ride it out untiL i saved enough to fix it.
i didn't expect the cabLe to snap (that's what happened tonight) though. :(
if i'm Lucky, it's just the cabLe, but i doubt it. doh!

is that enough info?

it's sitting at a garage now, and i hope to know in the morning exactLy what's wrong and what their estimate is.

i'm gLad i just finished the xmas shopping yesterday (aLL the kids, and mrs. sniffa) or i'd be a more-usuaL than horribLe uncLe/husband. :P

18. Fuck.
I'm sorry, but this does not sound good. It sounds like the trans was having other problems before the shift cable failure. If there was a delay before it went into gear (shift to drive or reverse, rev and it eventually goes into that gear), then you have problems with (from bad to not bad) leaking seals, dirty fluid screen/filter or (if you're lucky) low fluid. If it was not going into gear unless you rocked the shifter back and forth to find the "sweet spot", then maybe things are a little brighter, as it could be symptomatic of a shifter cable or cable parts coming apart. If the latter, it might be external component replacement to fix it.

I'm holding onto good thoughts for a Festivus miracle for your slushbox.

31. update
at first gLance, the transmission is fine - it seems i hit a rock, or snowbank, or something, and dented the tranny pLate.

and that's what caused the cabLe to snap, as weLL as the troubLed Linkage.

so, initiaL prognosis - new cabLe; find the dent and bang it back to its proper form.
$279 for cabLe + Labor. :bounce:

that was his initiaL guess and what happened. i hope that's it.

27. Oh well yeah, I have dealt with this: now next time you visit "her" pat
the dashboard & talk nice , then pat on hood and say "Good Car". Never curse at her and refer to the mechanic as
"The Doctor" whenever in "hearing" range. This will establish an aura of emotional "trust".

This will possibly calm the car into having a "not so expensive" episode. Beware, however, if you have another car that has to go to the "doctor" don't let Christine overhear, because once an attention whore........

still running like new. Don't go to AAMCO you will pay more than twice that and they will say it needs rebuilt even if it's a minor repair. Ask around you may find an independent shop that does good work at a reasonable price.

36. Know any auto-geeks?
You could probably get a new one under $500 if you knew someone who had a truck and could go to an auto graveyard with you to pick out the kind you needed...

That's what I did last time - my friend saved me about $1000 in the process!
