Am I the only one who hates hearing "Cali"?
As a short form of California? When did this start? Am I just an old crank?

I also detest when people refer to their computer as "my 'puter"

1. I never liked 'Cali' and I only remember hearing it in the last few years
Maybe a rap artefact? Maybe I just never heard it for reasons unknown to anyone -- I lived there in the '80s, '90s, and '00s, so you'd think I might have heard it at some point before.

Just don't like it. I'd like to get my hands on the Californicator who decided it was a worthy contraction.

2. Was it The Notorious B.I.G. or LL Cool J who started that?
Biggies legacy?

from Hollywood Homicide, but that'sa bout it.

Cali? Cali what? Calimari?

"SoCal" is cool, though. :-)

"Going Back To Cali"

I'm going back to Cali, Cali, Cali
I'm going back to Cali.. hmm, I don't think so
I'm going back to Cali, Cali, Cali
I'm going back to Cali.. I don't think so

Going back to Cali, stylin, profilin
Growlin, and smilin, while in the sun
The top is down, on the black Corvette
And it's fly, cause it's sittin on Dayton's
Laurents steering wheel, plushed out, gold-leaf phantom top
and three girls waiting
VRRRROOM engine's blowin, the chrome, is shining
Passing all the cars on the way
Movement of the wind, back wheels spin
Pop in a cassette and push play

I'm going back to Cali, Cali, Cali
I'm going back to Cali - yea y'all, I don't think so
I'm going back to Cali, Cali, Cali
I'm going back to Cali..

I'm going back to Cali, shakin 'em, bakin 'em
Takin 'em to spots they never before hung
?? the place, on Sunset it's a trip
Where the A.C.'s cold, and the girls still strip
The record skip, but this girl kept dancin
Prancin, grindin, grinnin, romancin
I asked her to the barn, so we could hit the hay
I wanna do this, Brutus, but I don't wanna pay

I'm going back to Cali, Cali, Cali
I'm going back to Cali - no man I don't think so
I'm going back to Cali, Cali, Cali
I'm going back to Cali..
..

I'm going back to Cali, rising, surprising
Advising realizing, she's sizing me up
Her bikini - small; heels - tall
She said, she liked, the ocean
She showed me a beach, gave me a peach
and pulled out the suntan lotion
Now I thought that was fast, but this girl was faster
She's lookin for a real good time
I said, "Close your eyes, I got a surprise,"
and I ran away with the bottle of wine

I'm going back to Cali, Cali, Cali
I'm going back to Cali.. I don't think so
I'm going back to Cali, Cali, Cali
I'm going back to Cali.. I don't think so

3. No, you're not. I also despise being told that I am from "the O.C."
It sets my teeth on edge. "The O.C." my ass. "The O.C." is a lame-ass POS soap opera.

Orange County, California, is where I'm from.

46. Oh my--I'm so sorry. About 'the OC'
so many in Orange County seem to have embraced that stupid show as some sort of arrival of orange county as part of the 'hip, happening' scene--the new pop culture icon. It's quite refreshing to see a resident that dislikes the label and the show.

That show hasn't earned orange county any cool points in my book. I hate it for all the reasons I hated Beverly Hills 90210. Because it is reinforces the idea that orange county is only for the wealthy and the white. It ignores quite a few other populations that live under the vast umbrella of orange county. Yet another (successful) attempt by Hollywood to create a perfect world that people will tune into every week, because everyone is 'prettier and more vapid' than they are. :eyes:

Until more people that live there(orange county), realize this and embrace the diversity growing in it's backyard, it will not be a 'cultural icon' but an agent of oppression, destruction of individualism, creativity and diversity.

Come on kids, get your OC sweatshirts, you too can be snarky and spoiled, living in an world where everyone looks exactly like you do--perfect, and makes ridiculous amounts of money! You too can wear designer labels, play on sun drenched, pristine beaches without polluted waters. Get breast implants for your graduation present and all the best drugs EVER! Go home to exclusive neighborhoods with no crime, no yellow, beige, brown or black people--yes kids--The OC is heaven on earth!

:sarcasm:

5. It bugs me too, but because I'm not from California, I figured...
it wasn't up to me to be bugged or not.

My daughter refers to California as Cali all the time. Her favorite clothing store is Hollister, and their rewards card is called "Club Cali".

37. Hollister is also a hell-hole of a town in Kollyforniya
The one in which I happen to be stuck. :banghead:

It has nothing whatsoever to do with the teenybopper clothes, thus furthering the confusion.

I don't live in "Cali" anymore than someone else lives in "Wash" or "Ari" or "Okla."

Damned kids. :grr:

15. Zoey
She is cute but a little bit kooky---as calicos have the reputation of being. She was a rescue. She was found pregnant. Her babies found homes and she was the last one up for adoption from a woman who rescues strays. She does kooky things like bring things up from the basement and deposit them on the kitchen floor during the night. Right now she is into bringing up workout DVD's. Then again she may just be giving me a gentle hint. :D

Ours is a combination calico-tabby. I think of her as a tabby because she has a tabby face, but strangers always say things like "is that your little calico lurking outside your door?" or "is that your little tabby outside stalking groundhogs?"

Fortunately, instead of saying "Gawd no!" I knew to say, "Only part time, in the summers" (I knew she was a "Jersey Girl" herself, and considered the question a compliment!)

I can understand you not likely "Jersey", but is "Jersey Shore" okay?

That cracks me up.

I don't mind the word "'puter", but only when used by a bona fide geek. When used by someone who got into computers less than 20 years ago, it just sounds fucking obnoxious.

But for the true computer warriors, who started out on 16K and less machines, or even machines with no monitors, just printers, 'puter is okay.

36. "Cali" is the Vietnamese word for California
For example, they will speak about "Nam Cali" (southern California). I don't know if it comes from Vietnamese (there are hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese in California) but that might be the origin.
