1. what does "jumped the shark" mean?
where does the expression come from? and I stopped watching during the second season, when it just got too ridiculous.

a term to describe a moment when somethin that was once great has reached a point where it will now decline in quality and popularity. Origin of this phrase comes from a Happy Days episode where the Fonz jumped a shark on waterskis. Thus was labeled the lowest point of the show.

4. Question from a non-24 viewer
I understand that each season covers a 24 hour day, but do the seasons run together? would this make "day 5" or does Jack get to rest between days?

8. I LOVE 24, it's my favorite crime/action show
And in no way has it jumped. During the third season, I would have said differently, but last season was the best one since the first season.
