Boy Scout Gets Knife Lodged In Brain

(KUTV) An incredible and un-suspecting accident leaves a Utah Boy Scout just inches from death when he was stabbed right between his eyes.

Jeff Jaeger spoke to Kevin Coulter and tells 2News how this was a truly freak accident.

While raking leaves for a Boy Scout event, one of the leaders flung a knife from his hand while trying to catch another scout who had tripped.....

.....The blade landed in between his frontal lobes. It was 2 millimeters away from hitting a major blood vessel in his brain.

1. Why was the guy holding a knife in the first place?
I thought you used RAKES to rake leaves. LOL

2. ????????? I can't bring the image of that into focus...
he tossed/flung a knife away to catch a kid tripping? And it carries enough inertia to penetrate another kids forehead...I just can't envision how this could happen. Forgive me but I can't get my frontal lobes around it.

I'm gonna file this one under...believe it or not.

6. That's some fling that he had flung!
the skull is a very thick dense bone in most places, the brow ridge especially.
Anyway, I wonder what was so bad about the other scout tripping and falling? Why fling a knife away with such force? Was he fearful of the danger of one scout's accidental fall setting off a squirmy scout pile-on in the leaves? Were the scoutmasters on this occasion instructing their little troopers in the manly art of operating a chipper-shredder? Were there running chainsaws in the vicinity? Why so tense, I wonder.

13. LOL. I doubt the leader was thinking about it rationally, as you do.

He wouldn't have the time. It's an automatic reaction to catch someone as they are falling. For many people, that is. People are not going to analyze for hours if they need to catch someone who is falling, and what consequences are going to be there if they do.

11. They got pictures.
The kid had to have his head split open to get that knife out.

8. He didn't intentionally fling the knife, the video on the website said...
Edited on Sat Dec-24-05 11:52 AM by jim3775
the scout leader dropped the knife but he didn't realize that it had gotten caught on his sleeve. When he flung around to catch the other boy the knife flew from the end of his sleeve.

10. An educated guess on how it happened.
Knife is one of those blades on a folding tool kit. Leader is using knife for some sort of work. Scout starts to fall. Leader throws knife to ground to catch falling boy. (Normally that would be smart. You don't try to catch someone with a knife in your hand.) Knife lands in leaves which prevent hold it in upright position. Leader misses catch, boy falls on knife. (A falling boy would provide the energy needed for the knife to penetrate the skull.)

Freak accident.

12. Nope. It wasn't even the boy who had actually fallen that
got knifed.
I think the leader flung his hand, the knife flew, and ended in the head of the boy that was behind them.
