I don't understand the NFLs playoff rules.
For the Chiefs (my team) to make the postseason, three things have to happen:

On Saturday, Denver must win at San Diego
On Sunday, Kansas City must beat Cincinnati at Arrowhead
On Sunday, Detroit must win at Pittsburgh

How many teams from each conference can get a wild cards spot? I thought it was 3 teams from each conference but from the Chiefs weak chances I am guess there are only 2 wild card spots in each conference. Did they change this?

1. no, it has been two for a while
although they created that extra division meaning that six teams make the play-offs instead of five. I am not sure why San Diego has to lose, I thought they already were eliminated.

2. Steelers have the tie breaker with the chargers.
but I don't know why that should effect KC if they are out either.

3. I was thinking that two wild cards played division winners and...
two wild card teams played each other during wild card weekend.

4. no the top two have byes
then #3 plays #6 (2nd wildcard) and #4 plays #5, although they may change that if the matchups are in the same division

5. Brief history of NFL playoff system...
1966 (Super Bowl I): One championship game AFL and NFL each between East and West champs.
1967 (II): NFL divides into four divisions in two conferences (East and West), AFL in two conf's.
1969 (IV): AFL sends two teams from each of two conferences to the playoffs.
1970 (V): AFL/NFL become conferences, now it looks like the modern system. Three divisions, one wildcard
1978 (XIII): Three divisions, two wildcards play for 4th spot
1990 (XXV): Three wildcards, lowest division champs lose first-round bye.
2002 (XXXVII): Four divisions, two lowest division champs play two wildcards for 3rd and 4th slot.
