Best MP3 sites???? Are there still legal free ones?
I just got an MP3 player. Pretty clueless. Want to get as much free music as possible, of course.

Recommendations?

1. Me too! Got my son a Toshiba MP3 player.
The instructions are vague, very confusing. I broke down an paid $18.95 for 1 yr of Napster. He downloaded several songs, but when he went to load it on his player it only loaded a couple. The software they gave with the player is specifically for Napster. I'm wondering if thats the only venue he can use?
If you can find any good and FREE sites, let me know.

4. I gave my kids iPods for XMas
and as soon as they plugged them in to my computer, iTunes came up and there was a page listing all kinds of downloads, most of them free.

They downloaded a Larry David interview and a Bill Maher comedy show. I watched both of those earlier today.

I would imagine if you go to the iTunes website, you can search for downloads. Do you have iTunes on your computer? If not, it is worth getting. My kids have been downloading songs via iTunes for a couple years now and they don't pay for any of them. I know because I won't let them use my credit card :)

11. Hey FBI, look over there, a terrorist!
while they're distracted, there are no more legal free ones. they just don't exist. If you want to download for free, you'll need kazaa or an equivalent peer to peer program

13. Seriously, checkout your local library. My local library has tons
of music CD's you can take home and copy. Not only that, but libraries also have a nice selection of audio books.

16. READ THIS...This a find like no other...
I found this post on a web site I go to once in awhile. I don't have a high speed internet connection or I would give it a try.

............................

For those of you who are Winamp users and broadband subscribers, as I am, I listen to Shockwave radio (free high quality streaming music, WITH ID3 Tags). Anyway, I found several stations on thier site that have become my favorites and used it as a reference tool when I was watching the tunes and would write down the song names and go from there. The other day I stumbled upon a program on CNET called Stream Ripper, and man, this thing is OUT OF THIS WORLD. It works as a simple add-on to Winamp, and it rips every song, WITH ID3 Tag, that the internet radio station plays. EVERY SONG! Forget downloading, writing down, searching for songs, etc. Put the station on before bed, press the rip button, and you wake up the next day with several hundred crisp 128-190 bit songs, with ID3 tags, categorized (and even dumps repeats into a junk directory). CHECK THIS OUT. I promise you you will be amazed. (You'd think I was an advertisement or something!). I'll try and post the sites to these below...

(For those of you who are new to Winamp...try it, just stick with the older 2.91 version, 3.0 is buggy and slow)

Winamp

StreamRipper

Have fun!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi ,
that's one nice tool that you found - had some difficulties to install it though - wouldn't run first as I also had Winamp3 on my machine - after uninstalling (it sucked anyways) it worked perfectly and I'm ripping like Jack...

Dude, I must say that this is one AMAZING find. You rock for sharing with the rest of us. Later

TG

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

gotta wonder, is this legal??

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Can you back up a little? What's Shockwave Radio and how do I set it up?

Thanks!
..............................................................
Okay, I figured it out, and it IS really cool.

Install your favorite version of WinAmp (I use WinAmp 3, but others have complained about its stability; it works OK for me).
http://download.com.com/3120-20-0.html?qt=winamp&tg=dl-2001&search=+Go%2521+

Install the matching version of StreamRipper
http://streamripper.sourceforge.net/srdownloads.php

Configure StreamRipper to save the MP3s somewhere.

Download a ShoutCast .pls file and open it in WinAmp.

If you're a DeadHead, like me, check out "Nebula - Grateful Dead Radio - Streaming shn's" - 800 minutes of the Dead since last night!

Let it rip!

21. I remember a "bug" in Winamp...
Sounds like they never fixed it, but anyways back in the day, I used to listen to streams on MP3.com, when it was good, and wanted to download the songs. So, at the time there were no streaming rippers, so I thought of another way to "rip" the songs. It was rather simple, in Winamp, back in the 2.x days, all you needed to do is start streaming a song, then open the playlist, and look at the properties of the .m3u file that is used for streaming. It gave the direct URL for the MP3 your are playing, just copy and paste the URL into the browser and download the song. Some sites I think now block this access but MP3.com didn't at the time. If you find a stream you want to download, in its entirety, then that is the way to go.

edit - here's a starting point - "Top 1000 Songs of the last 20 Years":

Also google "mp3 blogs" who normally host several songs at any one time (although finding more popular stuff is difficult). Here's a starting point with a decent blogroll:
