HypnoOddBall Movie Recommendation for the week of 26 December 2005:
Edited on Sun Dec-25-05 06:29 PM by HypnoToad
"Falling Down", starring Michael Douglas: 1993

Quite a twist of a movie, wouldn't you say?

The key scene, I felt, is when the unemployed bank worker holds up a picket sign reading "Not economically viable". It provides a big hint but doesn't quite reveal the "protagonist"'s past. He's a bit odd for a protagonist, too...

The story is steeped in visual and audio cues, which makes it that much more interesting... never mind the plot, which is so down to earth yet so utterly bizarre...

Thoughts or comments?

(note: Please don't "read" into this post. It's just one movie of many that's not one of those mentally void mainstream flicks. Next week's movie for discussing, if anyone cares, is a wonderful little comedy featuring Ricki Lake and done by John Waters and is his most 'mainstream' feature he ever made, and it's still delightfully k00ky... :) )

2. Okay
You asked that I won't read into this post, but the Marksmanship Coach in me says "Squeeze the trigger, don't jerk it".

3. "Serial Mom?"
"You *know* Mother hates the brown word!"

We went against the grain today Christmas movie-wise. "The Lion In Winter." The whole thing takes place at Christmas, after all.

As for "Falling Down," I always thought it had an element of homage to Charles Bronson.

5. Hey, Hypno Toad!!
:hi:

I watched the movie "Falling Down" three times during different points of my life. In all three, I became incensed at his "customer is always right" mentality as he laid into the poor kids behind the fast food counter. Now, I thought the rest was interesting. I KNEW he'd end up being run up a flagpole or something, or thrown into a burlap bag & then jailed. However, the "customer is always right" didn't jive with the rest of his feeling of persecution. Of COURSE he was losing his mind, right? But even a madman must have some consistency. The plot was an attack on institutions; institutions don't count the people at the bottom as anything as cogs. These are the people he abused.

It's funny, because twice when I watched it, my "station" was customer service. Being made to feel like the little anonymous server was par for the course. I confronted countless situations where people JUST LIKE HIM entered the store and got into my face & carried on in that manner. I may have sympathized with him slightly and been drawn into his overblown rage against the machine were it not for that scene.

But then, that may just be me. ;-)
