$770 for a friggin alternator??
I just had the pleasure of spending 4 hours in the shop waiting for them to install a new alternator on a car that I am going to get rid of in the next few months. I tried to gut it out, but got tired of asking my neighbors for a jump every morning. This sucks. At least I didn't spend that much on Christmas gifts so I can afford to pay the credit card bill when it arrives.

3. You should have just purchased a jump box...
I purchased one of these for my wife last winter to keep in the trunk in the event that something happens in the colder months of the year. Total cost was about $45.

5. Yes, I feel your pain. I recently (as in a few days ago)

had to buy a new car battery and while the subsequent adventure - (in pouring rain and gale-force winds) was hellish, I somewhat gleefully point out that I saved a bundle by just going to an auto parts store and having a friend help me put it in. It's usually the labour which generates the majority of the costs in these things. At least, I was able to afford Christmas for the people who matter most to me.
