My car died on the NJ turnpike

Heading to my brothers last Friday and I see this cloud of smoke coming out the back of the car. The engine starts racing because the transmission is slipping and I glide off of the exit and coast through the toll both and come to a stop. The transmission is smoking. Luckily there was a Super 8 hotel right at the exit so I get the family checked in and my son and I put transmission fluid in and get the car to go the extra 3/4 mile to the hotel parking lot. We rented a car the next morning and finally got to my brothers. Today I called a towing service that takes junkers and met them at the hotel. I snagged the tags and they took the car away.
This was our spare car, a 94 Taurus wagon with 115K mile so its on its last miles anyway. It's been reliable in the past but I guess we pushed it too far.

On top of that it took us 7 hours to drive from NYC to DC due to all the damn traffic.
