babies daddies
My girlfriend works as a nurse, and one of her coworkers (while appearing to be exasperated) said to her the last week as she was leaving "don't ever have a baby's daddy." So, did she mean:

don't ever have a baby?

only have a baby if by artificial insemination or some other means wherein the father will assuredly not be present for the upbringing of the child?

or don't ever have a man who will father a child, and then be a "baby's daddy"? if so, please give your definition of "baby's daddy".

discuss...

1. Maybe she just garbled her words and it doesn't mean what it says?
It happens.

always used to say (in all seriousness) "I have to go see my baby's mama after practice tonight."

12. In Britain "babyfather" is (so I hear) in usage in black culture
to mean a philanderer who has sired many children, but displays no interest in them.

My source for this information is a BBC drama entitled "Babyfather." :)

7. Some combo of 2 and 3, I think.
"My baby's daddy" = the father of my child, but relationship otherwise unspecified. i.e. not necessarily committed to you at all.

I get the feeling from this context that this guy may be a player who runs around on his many girlfriends, bringing heartache to all, and satisfaction to none.

8. Baby daddy.
Someone who makes a baby and only shows up to cause grief to the family. He doesn't stay around to raise the child and then bitches when DCS garnishes his wages for child support. He bitches about the way the child is being raised but doesn't want to actually get his own hands dirty. He doesn't show up for visits. He wants to know what the child support was spent on "to the last penny". He yells at you because you're raising his child as a Methodist when he's not one. He screams about the Girl Scouts teaching girls to become "pushy broads" but doesn't offer to pay for other activities. And it just gets worse from there.
Don't get me started-I have a baby daddy. They suck.

18. At times it can mean avoid them all together.
Most of the time it means "buyer beware". Make sure you know this person before you really get involved.
This asshole will have a place in my life until I die. It's hard to explain-women like me know that there are good men out there. We've been dealt a bad hand and have to live w/ it.
Ever get into a fight w/ a woman and think "WTF was I thinking, getting involved w/ women at all! I should have stayed alone!"
It's the holiday season, babydaddy probably didn't send the child support or come to visit or even buy a present. She was probably speaking out of sheer frustration, knowing that she would be going home to a house of disappointed children while asshole is out partying.

"Mine"
"THAT's not babysitting!!!!"

But he was a married guy saying that.

It's not babysitting if they're your own children, it's parenting. And if you think it's babysitting, obviously you're not doing enough of it.

25. I think she meant, "don't be a single parent"
A woman's baby's daddy (or a man's baby's mama) is someone with whom one has a relationship, but only through the baby. That is, her relationship with the man isn't one of girlfriend/boyfriend or wife/husband, it is mother of my child/father of my child.

29. Don't have a kid with a guy you're not willing to have a relationship with
"My baby's daddy" usually refers to the former boyfriend who is the biological father of a child and with whom a woman must maintain some sort of relationship, for the sake of the child.

It can be a very frustrating relationship, so when wishing someone to not have a "baby's daddy," she's wishing that someone not be in that relationship.

38. "Baby's daddy" is slang for an unmarried father.
I also hear "Baby's momma." It is said by one unmarried parent in reference to the other. Instead of "my wife," it would be "my baby's momma."

44. Don't date a single parent
I thought a baby daddy / baby mama was slang for a single parent, referenced by a person who conceived with that individual, and were not legally associated with each other via marriage or common law.

I also thought would be different from a divorced couple (an ex-spouse)
