OK. So someone we know is now in BIG Trouble
MY 20 yr old daughter called me, frantic to get a hold of my uncle/her great uncle, (a lawyer). Apparently, Her former bfriend (it's been about 3 years now) got himself in big trouble. I won't go into it, but suffice it to say, I NEVER would have expected what took place from this young man. He's looking at possibly 6 years in prison.

OMG this is really bad. My heart aches for this boy who loved my daughter so much. He was the class Valedictorian and had a full scholarship @ plenty of very good colleges but (:eyes: ended up @ Bentley College) At this point, we don't know if even Bentley will keep him...

My daughter is heartsick and so am I. Please send good vibes this way, k?

15. I second that
I think it could make a big difference, particularly if there seems to be an opening towards change in his attitude.

10. Yikes. Three years, criminal charges, and she still wants to support him?
It's her right to offer support, of course, and your right to choose to support her. I just hope it's safe for her to do so. Six years in prison?

"I NEVER would have expected what took place from this young man...He was the class Valedictorian and had a full scholarship @ plenty of very good colleges but ( ended up @ Bentley College) At this point, we don't know if even Bentley will keep him..."

Once again, it's your call, but in my experience, lots of smart people with excellent academic potential are also secretly unstable, unhealthy and engaging in criminal behavior. And this "BIG" "trouble" does sound...big. It's sounds like your heart is in a good place, so I hope no one is being taken advantage of, misled or lied to. Good luck to you!

14. More accurately, lots of smart people
are too damned smart for their own good. It takes an experience like this to wake them up and make them realize there's more to life than aceing all your tests.

By sheerest coincidence, I was just reading the early life story of Steve Pavlina, a guy who did very well in school, lost his way in college, wound up in an orange jumpsuit, got off easy, and straightened out in a hurry. I hope this young man follows his lead.

12. Six years in prison? Sounds like a DWI here in Illinois.
Now if he'd committed an AXE murder in a day care that would only be a year or so of probation...

Bless you and your daughter for caring enough to try and help him! Very often, this stuff looks really awful and painful from the outside, but after it all is done it can help turn a life around if the person involved has enough desire for change and enough support. Sounds like you two are doing all you can to provide the support...

Hope it goes ok for the young man. I hate to think about anyone's life being colored by a bad choice at this age.

18. I don't know if this helps
but...My ex-boyfriend ( no longer dating at the time but still my friend) in collage got drunk one night and made a STUPID bet with a friend and did robbed a store (No guns involved, just dumb testosterone).

He realized what a stupid thing he'd just done and drove over to the police station and turned himself in.

He too was on a scholarship. Our Head of the department called the DA, as did most of his Profs and lots of us students, Dean of the college of Arts ect....

Luckily the plead deal was no time in jail, 3 yrs probation lots of community services time and AA meetings for 3yrs mandatory and to graduate. He did keep his scholarship on the grounds of keeping all his other commitments by the court.

God bless and good luck friend
