Who else is tired of the 16-year old kid who went to Iraq....
CNN is making such a big thing of this, telling this non-story over and over again, I can't help but think that he or his parents (or their publicist) will be writing a book soon. The kid is way too young to be such a self-promoter. I think the next CNN blitz will be: "What did he do in Iraq? Stay tuned". Am I the only one who feels this way?

1. Me. I think what that kid did was absolutely moronic.
They really shouldn't be making him out to be a 'heroic' character.

2. His parents are dipshits
Mom is going to take some privileges away to punish him. Well duh. But I wonder if he'll run away again - maybe to China? - if he can't play that X Box.

3. I'll bet he and his parents are negotiating
a movie and book deal as the story is constantly repeated.

He's a rich kid who was naive enough to think he could go it alone. What kind of parents does he have that they were unaware he was gone until he called from KUWAIT? Doesn't it take awhile to get through the airport and the flight?

5. He sounds like he has a real journalist's instincts, though
He's gone way above and beyond in all his journalism classes. If he can stay alive for a few more years, he'll be a hell of a good journalist.

6. I absolutely agree.
If he'd been two years older and joined the Marines, there'd be millions of right-wingers calling him a hero. How's it any less heroic to want to serve through immersion journalism?

8. I hadn't even thought of that way!
You're right, if he'd gone over to kill chldren, he'd be a hero.

But this is America, so if someone goes over in order to - GASP!! - UNDERSTAND another culture, he's an idiot.

Though in defense of those calling him an idiot, what he did was fairly idiotic - noble, absolutely. But not very well thought. But, such is the nature of the invincible days of being 16.

12. What reasons did he give for going? Curious to see what it was really
like, wanted to write about it?

I haven't seen or read any coverage about this story, so I'm only vaguely aware that some teenager had the moxie to go over there...

17. He went over to do an assignment for his high school journalism class
Plus, he is of Iraqi descent (though he was born and grew up in the US), so he had interest there.

And he just decided that he'd go over on his own, and do his own immersion journalism.

9. Actually, they should keep running it then ask all the Repub
cheerleades why their 16, 17, 18 year-olds aren't marching to Iraq.

15. man, if he were my kid
Edited on Mon Jan-02-06 12:15 PM by tigereye
(not that my kid would have the extra 1800 bucks to blow and not need parental permission to get on the plane, let alone go to Iraq), he would be in for some serious punishment.

His ass would be grass, seriously.

However, his reasons for going were interesting, if extremely naive.

14. Maybe he was looking for the girl missing from Aruba....
I was tired of this story almost immediately. I knew it was one of those "personal" stories, like the Aruba girl, that the media would beat us to death with long after we'd lost interest.

The real question is: what does it say about our hyper-vigilant and expensive national security that this kid was able to get to Iraq so easily?

16. As Bush and cohorts attempt to paint Iraq as a safe place
The state department swoops in and grabs that kid as soon as they discovered him and stated publicly how dangerous Iraq is.

Bush has been complaining about Iraq coverage and the liberal media giving a bad impression of Iraq. Perhaps the boy trusted the word of the president.

Too bad the 'liberal media' does not pick up on the dichotomy.
