Packers fire Mike Sherman!

"Green Bay Packers General Manager Ted Thompson has fired coach Mike Sherman, saying the team needs to go in a different direction, Thompson said Monday morning.

Thompson said he told Sherman this morning and that Sherman was surprised at the decision to relieve him of his duties.

“Decisions like this are never easy, they require a lot of thought and consternation, but at the end of the day, I felt like we needed to go in a new direction,” Thompson said."

I am not sure how I feel about this. Of course the Packers are the most despicable organization in professional sports. However, Sherman can coach. He has dragged this team along for a few years when it lacked a whole lot of talent.

1. Do you think Brett will retire?
Or will he brave another year breaking in a new coach? My guess is that he'll retire. Too bad, really. He sure has a tough spirit.

(Go Bears!)

3.  Paging Dave Wannstadt!! Please pick up the white courtesy phone!
Edited on Mon Jan-02-06 01:27 PM by davsand
It is about time that the Packers did this, leaves the way open for Dave to come back to the NFC Central* (or is it the North now? How about calling it the Black and Blue division instead?)

:puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke:

Looks like some pretty big changes going on. The Vikes and the Packers dump loser coaches and Da Bears actually started winning. Who woulda thunk it?

Laura

*Packer fans, I seriously do NOT wish this on you. I really don't. I mean that would be just AWFUL...

5. I don't see them hiring Coach Wannie...
I heard Singletary might be in the running for the ViQueens job -- he'd be great in GB.

6. Oh god not Wannstadt.
Dave Wannstadt is a prime example of the power of networking in pro sports. Rather than take an up and coming assistant coach, some teams would rather go with a hack like wanny. The guy should be scrubbing toilets somewhere.

7. Agreed
Both Tice and Sherman can coach circles around Wanny.

8. We had him
It's only fair that you have to take him for a few years.

11. I always thought Wanstadt just LOOKED like a football coach
and it turns out that is exactly what he is--a guy who looks like football coach.

As a Vikings fan I hope the Packers hire Wanstadt--it'd be a few more years of futility out of Lambeau in that case!

12. Hell of a year for coaches named Mike.
Martz has been fairly sick from what I can recall, but it still doesn't excuse how the Rams have played, IMO.

I'm sure glad Wanny's going to Green Bay or Minnesota, how about you, Amish? ;)

Laura

And yes, all you Green bay fans, I know I will probably burn in hell for making jokes about this.

His sneaky mustache will also fit in nice in Wisco.

14. Shit Shit Shit Fucking Shit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now I believe we've seen the last of Brett as well.

I think they should have fired Thompson. After all, isn't he the guy who let the offensive line free agents go???

LOL

Yeah, I agree with you that Brett is leaving, and on a very sour note at that.

15. I wonder who they'll hire now?
I think it will be a assistant coach somewhere.

16. I want Mooch.
He's from the area, loves the Packers - and maybe most importantly, has a good relationship with Brett. If Mooch is hired, Brett might stick around for a couple, three years.

18. Mooch ? A Yooper leading Da Pack? Gasp!!
Didn't he get fired from his last coaching gig ?

Seriously, they should have offered it to him when Holmgren left for Seattle.

17. As a Packer fan, I can say this...I never liked Sherman, I don't really
think he's ever been the guy in charge. I'm happy he's going but sad that, if Brett keeps his word, he's retiring. it's a mixed up day.
