Famed stripper Barr dies of pneumonia
ASSOCIATED PRESS

ABILENE (AP) - Candy Barr, a well-known exotic dancer from the 1950s who settled into a quiet small-town life in Texas, has died of pneumonia. She was 70.

Barr, who was born Juanita Dale Slusher on July 6, 1935, in Edna, Texas, died Friday at a Victoria hospital, the Abilene Reporter-News reported in Sunday editions.

Slavik Funeral Home in Edna confirmed the death of Juanita Phillips and verified that she was also known as Candy Barr.

File this under "Cover up-you'll catch your death."

2. Why Candy Barr?
It seems like Slusher is a perfectly acceptable stripper name to begin with?

3. A beautiful real woman
Would it be rude to say she was built like a brick shithouse? It couldn't have been easy to do what she did in the 50's. What a beautiful lady. :)

Did you know, she worked for Jack Ruby?

Yeah, I think it's the same guy who shot Oswald.

7. It is.
Candy was once no-billed for shooting her husband, if I recall correctly. Later on, she was arrested on a pot charge. One of the DA's said that their office had been pressured to charge her with "something -anything by the respectable wives of Dallas officials". Most people acknowledged that Candy had been set up.

Candy also got into trouble out in LA, where she'd gone to work to get the money to pay her legal bills. (Probably at the old Pink Pussycat -I don't remeber). Ruby came out to see her and try to help her.

6. And she starred in perhaps the most notorious stag film of all time,
"Smart Alec". It can be seen in its entirety in Alex deRenzy's hardcore documentary, "A History of the Blue Movie".

8. Oh for gawd's sake.
I'm sorry she's dead, but I can't say I'm deeply moved by her courage as evidenced by her becoming a stripper at a time when this was taboo. It was also a bitch being a housewife in the fifties, no doubt. Now, had she been a scientist and made some ground-breaking discovery, then I'd seriously mourn her loss as a trailblazing woman. As a woman, doing what women have done since they first noticed their bodies were interesting to men... I'm not too impressed.
