Photoshop experts: I need advice on resizing images for the web without
Edited on Tue Jan-03-06 03:38 PM by Lorien
losing much in terms of quality.

One sample; I need to submit this illustration as a 50k file. Every time I try in photoshop it ends up a highly pixelated postage stamp. What am I missing here?

Thanks!

On edit: the image properties online are 92k, but the same JPEG in photoshop is nearly 800k...????

1. You just need
it to be 50K, no other resizement?

3. No, that's it. Those I'm emailing several pieces of art to
require that each be a 50k or less JPEG image. There must be a trick to it.

7. I use Macromedia Fireworks for resizing.

But you can use PS for it to, like lwfern said: Under File ---> Save for web, and then play around with the quality of the jpg-file.

2. In photoshop, go to File --> Save for web
Edited on Tue Jan-03-06 03:47 PM by lwfern
You should see an option to view "4-Up"

The top left is the original (uncompressed image). The other three will let you play around with their compression rates so you can compare potential compression squiggly things and file sizes side by side before picking one compression rate to save.

The photoshop file will look larger (800k in your case) than the closed saved jpg. It's that jpg size you need to be concerned with, not the size when it's opened in photoshop.

6. Thanks so much for the information
I've been messing around with it-now I'm having another problem with the color changing radically when I pull it into photoshop. I usually work in black and white, so I didn't notice this problem before.

*sigh*. I need to take a class...

9. A couple things to try
1. Make sure the file is in RGB mode. (Image --> Mode -->RGB). If it's in another mode, trying changing to RGB before the save for web deal.

2. When you are in that 4-up screen in Save for Web, there is a tiny little arrow in the upper right corner of the screen (left of the save button). Click that, and try changing to document color profile.
