Poll question: DU men: sports or sex?
I'm always fascinated by how men get so obsessed with sports all the time. It always seemed to me that there are far more important things to get worked up about, but then again, I'm a gal, so what would I know about it?

Someone on another thread tonight just said that they think many men get more of an orgasm out of sports than they do with sex. So that got me to thinking about what you men REALLY think about that, and what you REALLY prefer. C'mon, guys, don't be shy; remember, these here internets are anonymous. Your wife/girlfriend won't know anything about it unless she's standing right behind you (but that's another thread!)

Edited on Thu Jan-05-06 12:40 AM by tuvor
A huge fan, I was. After a while I did the math. 80 regular season games at 3 hours each = 240 hours. Each game counts for a smidge over ONE percent of a team's final point total. And after all that (back in the early 80s), only five out of 21 teams were eliminated in preparation for the playoffs.

So after all that time and all that effort, any one team had less than a one-in-four chance of missing the playoffs. Wouldn't we all like THEM odds??

So screw it. The best hockey is in the playoffs, anyway.

Oh, yeah. I chose "sex".

11. here's how the argument breaks down for me -
I am watching a movie with a good sex scene in it and I think "I'd love to be having sex just like that right now".

I am watching sports where -

A guy is thrown from 1 horse, and trampled by 100 other horses
Konishiki is lifted up by his Obi and hurled out of the ring, lands on his head, and can't get up
A linebacker smears a quarterback into astroturf softening ointment
A pitcher takes a line drive to the eye socket
A NASCAR driver pegs the wall at 200 MPH
A center forward blows out a knee after being chipped by an opposing midfielder
A hockey goalie takes a high stick to the neck

and I think "I'm so glad I am not that guy, I'd love to be having sex just like in that movie I saw, right now."

18. Different things, different capacity for enjoyment
Sex is kind of like a meal. Do it, finish it, be satisfied, do something else. Sports (and many other activities like reading, TV, video games, or even posting at DU) is a past-time, it is a way to pleasantly pass huge quantities of time with little to no effort. The ideal thing to do would be to have sex during the halftime show and then go back to drinking beer and watching sports.

Also, I do not think you'd want to see men get as worked up about sex as for a team on its way to the championship. The behavior would be insane, and there's no world series of screwing one's wife.

20. I go along with The Foremen
from "Hard Time to Be a Man" on their first CD:

Now, this bar graph represents the thought processes of the average American male in 1957. We see, in descending order of importance, sex, sports, cars, and sex in sports cars. But things have changed since the Enlightenment, as illustrated by this 1993 bar graph showing that men now think about sex, sports, cars, and promoting the wellness of the planet and the humanness of all people by creating a caring and nurturing environment in which to have sex in sports cars.

but, you're missing the category, "Thinking about sex while watching sports," which I tend to think would come in first or second in your poll.

In fact, IMO, "Thinking about sex while ____," (fill in the blank) would probably be a winner for men in any poll.

we may think we do, but I've known, and I'm seeing more and more of, men who are just obsessed with sports and would rather watch whatever sport they're interested in than do anything else, and I mean anything. I've never understood that since I couldn't care less about any sport, but to each his own, I guess.

36. Sex comes before, and instead of, sports with me.
Every now and then, I'll watch hockey, or go to the game. I'll watch the X Games on ESPN2 when I can, as it's stuff I could never do, or do well (and to drool over the female vert skaters). I'll maybe go to Tony Hawk's Boom Boom Huck Jam when it comes around.

I don't think pro wrestling is a sport, really, is it? Cuz I'll watch that now and again.

I'll ALWAYS (and as often as I can) make time for sex.

41. Depends
A sporting significant other might enjoy 'playing' while you watch. Or they might not. If it was a Championship game, it might be wise to boink your brains out beforehand, and then relax and watch the game ( assuming you're both into the sport ) with some kickass tasty snacks and good beer/wine. The boink some more at half-time cuz I for damn sure am not going to watch that godawful tripe.

But, 10 times out of ten, if I had to choose between the two, I'd go with the bedroom sports

53. George Orwell
I remember reading in George Orwell's "Down and Out in Paris and London" about the mysterious connection between football (soccer) and politics. I seems to me that spectator sports are mostly a distraction. How much better would we be doing if we got passionate and put our energies into something that mattered? (Politics for instance). I cannot fathom why intelligent people take spectator sports seriously.

That stated, I do find some sports (baseball, football, tennis) to be more tolerable viewing than most anything else on television provided that the sound is turned off so that one doesn't have to listen to the inanity of the announcers and one can actually have a decent conversation at the same time.

Sex is orders of magnitude more important than that, and so closely tied to emotions and personality that I wouldn't want to try to separate them.
