Poll question: Who believes the Government covered up the truth about UFOs in Roswell
Edited on Wed Jan-04-06 11:43 PM by RagingInMiami
One of the most famous stories in 'UFO history' is that in 1947 an alien craft crashed in the New Mexico desert near Roswell and that civilians arriving at the scene witnessed dead and injured alien bodies. When the military arrived they captured the craft and aliens and initiated a massive cover-up.

The story has been bubbling along for many years, fueled by various pieces of fairly inconclusive evidence. However, 'Roswell Fever' has struck recently with, firstly, US congressman Steve Schiff of the GOA demanding the release of official documents relating to the event and, more importantly, the emergence of film footage which purports to show the military dissection of two of the alien corpses in 1947.

1. Third option:
I don't believe we were visited by extra-terrestrials at Roswell, but I still think our government lied - to cover up some other classified program.

Why are there all these strange polls tonight? Polls about UFOs and the Moon landing? Is it Crazy Season here on DU or something? Are the freeptards coming here and trying to make us all look like crazies?

(Edited for clarity.)

7. Don't speak too soon
They always look at the guy with the lowest post count. (I know you've been a member longer than me)

It's just that we should be able to laugh at ourselves every once in a while.

23. and the residents of the phoenix area saw what remained an unexplained
set of lights moving in the night sky, far too quickly for any of our aircraft--there were even pictures in the local paper the next day.

bookended by the development of the atomic bomb and the the camcorder. The first instilled the paranoia necessary to believe they were real; the second made it possible to prove they weren't.

25. Untrue
I don't know what UFOs are, but there are records of sightings through the centuries. There is plenty of evidence that UFOs--whatever they may be--exist, just no definitive proof in the form of physical evidence. Or, at least no definitive proof that is available to us common folk....

30. Lots of anecdotal evidence
about the Loch Ness Monster and Bigfoot too...

All I know is this: when I was a kid in the 60s people were seeing UFOs all the time. Sightings would make the paper every now and then.

When the first handheld camcorders showed up, the sightings stopped dead. None. Zilch.

Now, either aliens are aware of this and are going to great lengths to not be recorded--or a lot of those original claims were bunk.

31. I agree that a healthy skepticism is always best
But I think you're wrong about the camcorder issue. There are actually quite a few video captures of unidentified flying objects. I don't know what they are, but they have been caught on film/tape.

My guess is that a lot of the original claims were bunk, as are a lot of the current claims, but I'm willing to keep an open mind on what the actual evidence may suggest.

One of the most compelling pieces of evidence, to my mind, comes from the defection of a professional debunker, Dr. J. Allen Hynek, who worked with the air force's Project Blue Book for a number of years. Hynek was a serious scholar who had served on the faculties of both Ohio State University and Northwestern University. After PBB closed down, Hynek decided that the phenomena was worthy of continued scientific study. He devoted the rest of his life to the study of UFOs. Here's a link to the J. Allen Hynek Center for UFO Studies website, in case you're interested:

Please understand, I'm not proselytizing for little green men. I'm only pointing out that there is evidence of SOMETHING unusual going on.

6. Why these outlandish threads when reality needs our attention?
Are we trying to self-destruct? What's the point here?

If we are becoming the media, can we focus on the issues at hand?

10. Here's what really happened:
It was discovered that the government was using real live human beings in various experiments in Area 51. These human beings, probably prisoners of illegal wars, were obviously starved guinea pigs, frightening from the standpoint of Americans who live in a bubble, and have never witnessed this kind of abuse and neglect affected on members of our own race. It was therefore easy for the government to sell, and for Americans to buy into, planted stories about aliens and the like. Now you know.

12. the usa gov't has acknowledged the cover-up
Edited on Thu Jan-05-06 12:02 AM by pitohui
you may visit the nat'l atomic museum in albuquerque where they have a replica of the device code named "ash can" that crashed at roswell

it was covered up for reasons of nat'l security

the "ash can" balloon was part of project mogul and tested the atmosphere for radiation following some of our nuclear tests in the western usa

there is no more soviet union and anyone who wants to have an atomic bomb already has one, no more reason to lie about it, so the feds have come clean

much to the disgruntlement of town of roswell, which profits by selling the alien myth

nothing wrong w. harmless fun, but this mystery is can now be stamped solved

there are many legitimate ufo events, but citing roswell is a certain way to not get taken seriously by anyone who has done some real digging

what's next, alien autopsy?

not to be mean, buyingthyme, but what's your cite for your hypothesis, mine is the nat'l atomic museum of this nation, anyone can pay their $5 and see the device for themselves, how did torture victims from southern nevada fall out of the frickin sky onto roswell, new mexico? that's just silly on the face of it without some proof

16. I saw one. It came down hovered over me then flew away.
That was on the Texas Gulf Coast in Spring 1999, so I know they're real.

I don't care if you believe me or not.

I know what happened.

It would be an unusual night if I wasn't smoking anything.

No, I just saw that one, just that once, however I was very impressed by the experience.

19. yeah but that wasn't the roswell event, was it?
one million people in mexico city saw multiple ufos in mexico city in the mid 1990s

that doesn't prove roswell was real, or that alien autopsy was real

i don't doubt you saw what you saw or that a million mexicans saw what they saw, but the roswell event is different because the event has now been declassified

the gov't has admitted to grabbing onto the ufo thing and using it as a cover story for the then-classified "ash can" program

what happened to you can still be real, just as if i say a dog ate my homework, it doesn't mean that there is no such thing as dogs...or homework, people actually tend to embroider reality to make lies more believable rather than making up whole cloth

I was just saying I saw one, that's all.

Though I have read and seen some interesting things about Roswell, so I voted for choice number one.

29. I had a girlfriend who said she saw one
It was hovering just above a deserted road in rural Arkansas. When she got close to it, it took off and flew away.

She is a professor who never tried to make any money or get any publicity on the story.

She just says it happened and you can believe her or not.

if they were here to check us out.

I use to believe in UFOs and even thought I may have seen one once.....I've changed my mind in the passing years.

I do indeed think a lot of Carl Sagan.

28. Sometimes I think possums have been dumped here by space aliens.
Ya know, earth is the place they take their unwanted pets to and dump 'em off. ("Yes, Urko, we're taking little Targi for a ride to the Sol system. There's a nice little planet there where he can waddle free to his heart's content.")

Heck, that might even explain homo sapiens, come to think of it. LOL
