Missing Singer's Body Found

January 5, 2006

The body of singer BARRY COWSILL, who was reported missing last year around the time of Hurricane Katrina, was found by police at the Charles Street Wharf in New Orleans on Dec. 27. He was 51. The COWSILLS were the famous family band of the '60s and '70s that inspired the PARTRIDGE FAMILY. The cause of death has not yet been released.

Barry was believed to have been at the infamous New Orleans Convention Center after Hurricane Katrina hit. In a video of survivors posted on the CNN Web site, brother BOB says the family spotted a man who looks to be their famous sibling. "We saw him ," he said. "We're pretty sure that's him, and if it was him, it meant he was at the convention center." The last the family had heard of Barry was from a message left on his sister's answering machine asking for help: "I don't know how to get out of town except wait for a bus ... I've been so ... lonely ... I hope I get in touch with you."

Following the fame of his famous family band, Barry had battled substance abuse and thoughts of suicide over the years. Barry is survived by brothers Bob, BILL, RICHARD, PAUL, JOHN and sister SUSAN COWSILL.

This is really too bad and I feel for his family. So much tragedy associated with Katrina that it boggles the mind.:-(

7. Sigh. The Cowsills hardly fit the stereotype of New Orleans musicians
but then, when you delve a little more deeply into the scene, you realize that there is no such thing as a "typical" New Orleans musician. Jazz, blues, funk, rock, folk-rock, Cajun, zydeco, hip-hop are just a start, so why not good old bubble-gum pop, too?

One does, though, wonder what the pop equivalent of a "second line" jazz funeral might be like...
