USC QB Matt Leinert: "I still think we're the better team"...
Though I usually don't give a crap about sports, I was glad to see USC get beat last night--especially after QB Matt Leinert came up with that typically-University-of-Spoiled-Children comment after the game, implying that either:

1) Texas's victory was luck
2) USC was the victim of bad calls
3) He's too much of a wimp to acknowledge they just got beat, and by definition the "better team" is the one that wins.

Boo hoo.

1. I've been waiting for this.
It was 5 minutes after the game. He didn't have time to even come down from the loss. Give the kid a break.

2. Poor sportsmanship
Yeah, it was a tough loss. Chin up, Matt. Take it like a man and a national role model should--congratulate the winning team.

4. He did say they made the plays.
Come on, they stuck a mike in his face 5 minutes after a gut-wrenching loss. I'm not going to blame him for comments he made under those circumstances. I'm guessing that if something emotionally draining happened to you, you might not have your best comment available 5 minutes after it happens. USC has been nothing but complimentary of Texas during the leadup to this game. Don't just take one comment and extrapolate.

11. In all honesty
I didn't see the interview--read it on Yahoo!, and that remark was singled out.

12. It was an on-the-field interview.
The sideline reporter literally jammed a mic in his face and asked for his reaction. He looked really stunned. He looked like he just wanted to get back in the locker room.

3. Well, the dude was down before he made the toss.
You know what's worse than players grieving over a big loss?

People name calling them.

Seriously, there was one play that would have ended the game - 4th and 2. If they get a first down, I'm sure someone on Texas' squad would have said the same thing.

I just chalk it up to emotions, where I cannot do the same for people who berate them for it.

5. Leinart = Polly Pissy Pants
Well, not really.

He's just pissed that he might not be the 1st QB taken in the draft now.

6. Leinart Will Be Taken WAAAAAAYYY BEFORE Vince Young
Vince Young may not even be a 1st round pick at all.

7. Did you watch the game last night?
Young could start for half the teams in the damned playoffs.

AMAZING performance. He literally looked like a man amongst boys.

10. Yeah he should've worn a red "S" for "Superman" on his uniform
during the second half.

Seriously!

13. Yes, I did. I Watched A College Game.
Vince Young's skills will not translate well in the pros. USC's defense was horrible all season. Fresno State did the same thing to USC's defense.

Young has terrible throwing mechanics.

14. terrible throwing mechanics
Kosar
Layne
Jurgenson
Favre
Stabler
Marino

Should we compare the long list of great throwing mechanics and how they relate to wearing a baseball cap and holding a clipboard?

15. Did the Snake kind of sidearm the ball like Young does? I remember
there was something odd about the way he threw, but I was too little when those great Raider teams were winning to really recall...

Jurgenson's balls were just wobbly ducks.

16. Stabler just about underhanded it
of course Kenny's elbow did lots of bending in all kinds of ways. ;-)

I included Jurgenson because mechanics don't portend an NFL career. At least they didn't back when the ability to play was more important than being in the all trading card team.

19. Those Guys' Mechanics Were No Where Near As Bad As
Vince Young's. We will soon see.

18. Vince Young can throw the ball 80 yards in the air.
He also led the nation in passing percentage. Who gives a shit what it looks like. He'll get it done.

Leinart will, of course, be taken before Vince Young. But Vince Young will be taken in the first round and he WILL do well at the next level.

9. It was a boneheaded quote, but if you read the rest of his comments,
not bad really, the overall sentiment was "they played a better game than us, it was a great game, congrats to them" kind of thing.

The "I think we're the better team" comment is the kind of thing that all top teams like that SHOULD think, even after a loss, but not say. I think he slipped by saying it, but I'll cut him slack.

If the rest of his comments were in that vein, or if that was all he'd said, then I'd agree.

20. Uh, they WERE the victim of some lousy calls.
Including one for a touchdown that wasn't. I'm not even a USC fan, and *I* think they're the better team. They played for shit in the first half, but they're more solid than Texas.

21. Vince Young
It is believed that Young will not enter the draft this year. He can use that time to hopefully work on his throwing motion, and hopefully he won't get hurt.
Also, Matt Leinert may be right in his assertion; USC may have been the better team,(it didn't look that way to me; they looked pretty even) but that doesn't matter. Sometimes the better team loses.
