Finally! Some new cat pictures! (dial-up warning!)
Edited on Fri Jan-06-06 10:30 AM by hyphenate
First of all, back in April, I added Oliver to my clowder of cats when my friend's mom was in the hospital and couldn't take care of her cats. And a couple of my Jessica, who has diabetes and is going to be 15 this year. And finally, Delenn, who enjoys hopping into things and stubbornly won't get out of them! I'll have some of Jean Luc and Garibaldi soon, which will complete the brood here--at least at this moment in time!

This is shot #1 of Oliver (the other one to follow) in front of the computer. It's the only "table" they're allowed onto as such, but not all of them like to come up and sleep with me on the puter.

This is Jessica on an outing. They are all indoor cats, but Jess never bolts when I take her out, so I do take her on such when the weather is good and not too cold.

This is Jessie laying down in front of the computer being fresh.

Here is Delenn (aka "Little One" which she isn't nowadays!) inside a laundry bin I brought in. She slept in it for a couple of hours that night--I had to get it out of the way finally!

When she was a kitten, I thought she was going to be blind because she had a film over her eyes. Three weeks later, though, it cleared up. But some time after that, she had an illness called "vestibular syndrome" which made her stumble all over the place, lean her head toward one side, and her eyes were constantly moving back and forth. It's an inner ear infection. She's fine now!

edited because two pics of Ollie looked identical!

4. She lost half her body weight
as a result. She went from 14 lbs to 7. She's about at 8 1/2 right now, I think.

5. Yep! On his nose!
He has such an arrogant face sometimes. And he's not afraid to tell you off, either. Though he is a cuddlebug, and sleeps with me under the clothes, with his head sticking out.

6. Thank you, Millie!
They are my kids, no doubt about that. Unlike kids, they don't grow up, move out and break their mother's heart.

9. It sure looks that way, doesn't it?
I tried to wipe his nose the first day, and darn it, but the spots were there to stay!

Glad you like my babies. :)

10. If you recall
at the BBQ last summer, I said that Ollie looked a bit like Quinn. He's probably more of a troublemaker than Quinn though!

17. Hehehe, Quinn is more of an observer than a troublemaker.
He likes to perch on top of the bookshelf and watch everything that's going on.

16. She puts up with those nail covers?
Not that they aren't cute, but boy, what a good kitty! Your cats look happy and healthy (not to mention downright adorable).

12. Jessica is a sweet little calico tabby
So is my "Little" - people call her "your little calico", but I think of her as a tabby, because she has a tabby face.

13. Sweet wouldn't be exactly the word
I'd use! She cam be a real bitch! Because of her diabetes, she's constantly hungry and will eat just about anything. I even offered her some fruit cocktail the other day to show it wasn't something she would eat, and she actually DID!

When a cat has the calico markings in a tabby pattern, they're called Torbies. If they have the calico colors and they're symmetrical on the body, they're called Torties, for Tortoiseshells. A Tortie would have more dilute colors, while a Torbie will have more visible markings. Usually, the only ones who are actually called Calicos are those really pretty cats with more white, with distinct black and red splotches on their coat. :)

Cat genetics are fun. Whole websites discuss them in detail. Factoids like there are more male ginger cats than females (orange/buff/red); that it is extremely rare for a cat with both red and black markings to be male, since both colors are carried on the X chromosome--there would have to be a mutation of XXY to have one be male; that white is not considered a color gene--it is a random color that shows up in different proportions all the time (which is why a clone cat might look completely different from the original cat); and lots more. It's the only practical application I've ever seen for all that stuff we learned in biology!

14. The guy who gave her to us thought she was a male
He had named her "Bernie" because she was black, white and orange like the Flyers colors, and Bernie Parant was a famous Flyer.

I walked in the vets, and the assistant said "ah, isn't she a pretty like brown patch tabby". She explained what you said - that it's extremely rare for cats with red & black markings to be male. My Little has VERY distinct tabby markings, together with mackerel markings on one side, clear bright calico patches on the other, and white legs and chest. Very strange little creature.
