Anyone ever in the crawlspace under a house...
And suddenly...you feel something furry land on your neck. And you swipe it, and it's a FUCKING HUGE UGLY SPIDER?????

This happened to me once - and that's why I always wear a bandanna around my neck when going under there

3. I had to repair a broken drain pipe under my house. Talk about critters!
Edited on Fri Jan-06-06 01:52 PM by maveric
We were broke at the time so calling a plumber was out of the question. Were talking August in SoCal. Hot! Well anyway, I'm under the house with a sawzall cutting a pipe, when I feel something on my arm. A fucking scorpion! I'd never seen one in SoCal before. Ahhh! I killed it for my own protection. A while later my son was yelling something to me from the vent. It sounded like "cake","bake", "rake". No, SNAKE! It wasn't a rattler but it quietly squirmed to the other side of the space. Didn't bother me at all.
I've been under there now for about 3 hours now. Its dirty, smelly and hot. The pipe job was a success. Then I heard and saw something moving in the far corner from me. I thought it was my cat, who is all black. This creature was Black and White! A Skunk! Apparently I had a family living in my crawlspace. We looked at each other, not moving, for a few minutes, when I slowly crawled out, tyeing my tools to a rope to pull them out.
The only casualty was the poor scorpion. There were spiders all over there too.

4. That story gives me the willies just reading it
SHUDDER

Not so much the skunk as they're just a pain in the ass to clean up after....but the SNAAAAAKE and the scorpion.

I had no idea they lived in LA - I dealt with them plenty back in Thailand though...

And I've been here since 1980.
I've seen them in Arizona and Florida.

10. My SO has gotten over his spider phobia now
Because he spends so much time in crawlspaces, he's just gotten used to them. He still squeals like a girl when he sees a snake though. :giggle:

22. Actually there are houses with crawl spaces here.
Older houses with pier and beam foundations will have a crawl space. There are houses like that here; I almost bought one. :)

13. Oh yeah,
not a good thing.

Plus, someone had left the clean-out plug out of the toilet drain, and a step-kid flushed his daily constitutional right on top of me.

19. Hell I have had ALL those critters in the LIVING space of my house.
Yes a skunk in the kitchen before - it learned how to open the wooden framed screen door to get at the dog food on the porch and just came in for a stroll...cat brings snakes and lizards in all the time, though the baby rattlesnake that bit my youngest son was already in (of course I made HIM come in because there might be snakes in the yard in August)

Scorpions are a regular pain in the ass around here (or whereever they get you). Spiders don't bother me at all, keep the flies down.

23. Crawlspace story :
(no creepy-crawlies involved...well almost). Tornado season in the Panhandle. Always on a Friday night. Dad and I liked to watch the fights together. (Cue Gillette theme song) "Who ya want - black trunks or white trunks?" Mommie Dearest suddenly got scared of potential storms, made me go "under the house" to be safe. More like scared that Dad and I were doing a little bonding. So...she'd open the trap door in my closet, throw down a blanket and make me lay down there...till the fights were over, when it was magically safe to come out again. She'd either stay up top and argue with Dad ("Leave her the F alone" he'd say) or come down with me and stroke my hair, telling me how only SHE could keep me safe.
