January 4 was the 197 th birthday of Louis Braille (b. 1809), creator of the Braille alphabet. Blinded at age 3, Braille developed the system of raised dots representing letters by the age of 15. He based it on a complicated code of raised letters used by French soldiers. 183 years later, Braille-style alphabets have been developed for most of the major languages around the world. In 1952, the French government recognized Braille as a national hero and his body was exhumed for reburial in the Pantheon in Paris.
