Poll question: Say you borrowed your friend's copy of 'Fast Food Nation'...
Edited on Fri Jan-06-06 09:56 PM by dolo amber
Now, just for the sake of argument, say you spilled something on it. Not too bad, no internal damage...just a wee stain on the cover.

Now, just for further argument, say it was McDonald's coffee that was spilled.

Would you:

1. I borrowed an SAT study guide
from my HS guidance counselor once

She got it back without any semen stains on it, which is more than I can say for my friend's porno mags...

3. I just think it's fuckin' hilarious.
D: "Now I have to buy asthmaticeog a new book."

me: "No, you don't."

D: "But it's only like $5 at Half Price Books."

me: "It's McDonald's coffee. That's worth WAY more than a new book."

10. You should never have told me that post was RKz's and let
me continue to labor under the delusional memory that it was yours. You were a GOD to me, man...a GOD!

5. A lot of times when I lend books...
...I tell people not to worry if it gets damaged or stolen or something, because it's better that people are reading it than it sitting on a shelf. That way they don't have to agonize when something does happen - I've already covered it.

6. But when you lend books to the Gallagher brothers...
...you just have to EXPECT they'll get urine, vomit, and blood on them.

8. A book is a book. You hurt it, you replace it and give back the original.
Denys Finch Hatton lent a book to someone once, and when he didn't get it back broke off the friendship. When asked if he would lose a friendship over a book he said something like "no, but they(the borrower) would". It's about respect.

9. See post #2.
It's my book. I absolved her. It was a beat-ass used paperback, and the irony wins my smile.

That said, I agree 100% with your post. A friend of mine, after some cajoling, once borrowed my first edition hardcover of "Infinite Jest." It came back with a cracked spine and - I shit you not - tomato sauce on several pages. That was a LOOOOOONG time ago, and I still won't trust him with any of my stuff. I wouldn't even lend him a guitar pick. :grr:
